Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Many youngsters may be familiar with these idioms, but not sure of their meanings. This attempt to explain them uses color photos, cartoons, and frequently difficult language, crammed onto double page spreads. While this may seem a bit overwhelming to adults, it probably will not faze children who are very familiar with fast-paced TV and video games. Thirteen idioms ranging from "Goody Two Shoes" to "Bet Your Bottom Dollar" to "All That Glitters Isn't Gold" are described along with a likely explanation of the origin of the phrases. Teachers could find this and other titles in the series "It's Just an Expression" helpful when offering language instruction or teaching ESL classes. Useful additions include a glossary, bibliography, and index. More resources for using the book are offered on the publisher's website. The very limited subject matter makes this title one that does not meet a wide range of need, so purchase for most collections is not really necessary. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
