Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A straightforward look at firefighters and the equipment they use. Rockwell's text follows young Jason as he tours the local firehouse, meets some firefighters, and even gets to sit in the driver's seat in the fire engines. True fans won't find much that's new here, but for some young listeners, it's a perfect introduction to the popular topic. All of the characters are Dalmatians, pictured standing upright and dressed in human clothes. At times it's difficult to determine which character is which, but their attire does help to differentiate among them. Rockwell's brightly colored illustrations are painted in a childlike style, though they include quite a few (occasionally blurred) details that belie their apparent simplicity. The enduring appeal of all things related to fire fighting as well as Rockwell's popularity ensure a place for this book in most libraries.-Lisa Dennis, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Fledgling readers will happily tag along as a firefighter squires two young visitors through firehouse doors for a glimpse behind the scenes and chances to sit behind the wheels of a pumper truck and a ladder truck. Rockwell depicts her all-Dalmatian cast-which includes both Captain Jack and Lieutenant Maria-and the trucks in a freer style than is her wont, pauses the tour for full-spread views of each truck, and a labeled schematic of the pumper, then finishes up with balloons and fire hats for the children. And in a deft parent-pleaser at the end, one of the pups is so impressed by the way everything at the firehouse is neatly stowed that he straightens up his toys at home before dropping off to dream of "beautiful big red shiny fire engines racing through the night." Rockwell at her best: lively, informative, and tuned to the sorts of details that fascinate younger children. (Picture book/nonfiction. 5-7)
