    Not Really for Me

For years I've read how influential H.P. Lovecraft has been on sci-fi and horror. When I saw how inexpensive his works are I decided to give At The Mountains of Madness a try.
Lovecraft's writing is very descriptive, and scientifically accurate for the time it was written. His descriptions of an Antarctic expedition have a "you are there" quality and an attention to detail that would be at home in a book written decades later.
Unlike other writers of this era, Lovecraft works with some huge ideas here as the characters make discoveries that significantly change our understanding of earth's ancient history. This book had a clear influence on all three movie versions of The Thing, and the plot is so much like Prometheus recent efforts to make a movie based on this book have been abandoned.
Where this book put me off was partially in the way it was written as a journal. Burroughs used the same narrative style in his John Carter books, but here the style repeatedly took me out of the story. Time and again the main character uses the device of refusing to tell us some detail because it is so, so horrible, then he does it anyway after endless protestation. It gets old very quickly.
This is a short novel, and it feels like a setup to a larger story. I'm not aware that Lovecraft wrote any follow-up, and that's a shame because he created a world ripe for big adventures. Maybe some day a film will expand the story and do it justice.

    Beautiful

Eerie and intelligent, this is truly Lovecraft at his finest. Horror and science fiction flawlessly intermingled, a must-read!
