Overview

At the Old Schoolhouse was recorded on the Johnson Mountain Boys' intended "farewell tour" of the late '80s. The group later decided to stick together, perhaps because the bandmembers knew they were giving performances as good as this. Throughout At the Old Schoolhouse, the group gives lively, invigorating performances that prove traditional bluegrass isn't boring. It's a terrific live album, and one of the Johnson Mountain Boys' finest moments.

The Johnson Mountain Boys may have been located in the traditional wing of bluegrass but they didn't play like stuffed shirts. During this 'farewell' concert they mixed gospel, Texas swing, up-tempo jams, original numbers, and trad ballads. They were equally convincing doing slow, bluesy stuff or high octane instrumentals. I bought this set on LP over 15 years ago and later upgraded it to CD. The only thing the CD lacks is the fine essay that was contained in the two LP set. This is a 4 1/2 star album.
