Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-An ambitious compendium of the plots of 31 of the most famous and beloved of the classics. With her obvious and infectious love of opera, and a lively and engaging prose style, Fiery may capture the imaginations of a new generation of opera lovers. Admittedly, opera is a hard sell to today's teens, but the author's deft handling of some of the most convoluted plots in the history of human storytelling cannot be denied. Each entry opens with an explanatory paragraph, setting the opera into historical context, and then dives straight into the explication of character, setting, plot, plot, and more plot. Each summary is enhanced by Malone's lush gouache illustrations. Many of the paintings take up full pages, and all have a dreamy, mythical air about them, allowing viewers to imagine themselves peering into the composers' minds to see the original Carmen and Don Jose, Figaro, or Don Giovanni. Anita Ganeri and Nicola Barber's The Young Person's Guide to the Opera (Harcourt, 2001) and Anne Siberell's Bravo! Brava! A Night at the Opera (Oxford, 2001), both of which explain in detail how operas are written and staged, are for a younger audience. At the Opera will be useful for reports on the lives and works of composers and for field-trip preparations. It is best suited to collections in schools featuring extensive arts and history programs, or for supplemental reference purposes at larger public libraries.-Sophie R. Ideal for anyone who is looking for an introduction to the world of opera

This book makes opera very approachable to everyone, whether you are an enthusiast or not. Each opera has been very well adapted into a story form that does an excellent job of drawing the reader a map of a sometimes very complicated plot. Overall, a beautiful presentation, an easy read, very entertaining. I highly recommend it.
