Children's Literature
Entries like At the Park in the useful "My World" series at Level 2 have two or three declarative sentences per page with enough words to challenge a good first or an average second grade reader. The language sounds childlike and friendly rather than textbook-ish or pedantic. A dad with two children, clearly of different races, takes them to the park where they run their dog, feed the pigeons, ducks and squirrels, play with various things, and then head home. It is a cheerful story illustrated with photographs and cartoon depictions of the family. Phrases at the end of the book repeat some aspects of the text and invite readers to write their own stories about the subject. Endmatter includes four labeled picture-outtakes that invite readers to search the previous pages for the match. All and all, a good addition to classroom reading series, if not an essential one. 2001, Copper Beach, $15.90. Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
