Athens: A New Guide

Overview

Beyond the breathtaking beauty of the Parthenon, Athens is still one of Europe’s lesser-known cities. Athens: A New Guide fully explores all the treasures of this ancient city—the bazaars and food markets of Monastiraki; tiny tucked-away Byzantine churches and rare gems of antiquity; the converted warehouses of the increasingly fashionable Psirri and Thiso; and perhaps the most beautiful metro station in the world at Syntagma, a fantasy of shimmering reflections and a showcase for recent archaeology. From its ...

From its amber shops and patisseries, to one of the most outstanding museums in Europe, Athens is a true source of riches. Written for both the first-time visitor as well as the seasoned Hellenophile, this discerning guide also includes an up-to-date selection of cafés, restaurants, and hotels. Elizabeth Speller read Archeology and Classics at Cambridge, where she is currently a Visiting Scholar.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Published just in time for the 2004 Olympic Games, these two books offer travelers an alternative to Fodor's or Frommer's. Smith (Britain's ambassador to Greece in the 1990s) and Speller (a visiting scholar at Cambridge University and author of Following Hadrian) both focus on the historical and cultural aspects of their chosen city, Smith by linking Athenian landmarks to two major time periods-the classical era and 1821's War of Independence to the present-Speller by arranging her book as a series of eight walks through the neighborhoods of Athens, with special attention paid to historic landmarks. Although differing in tone (Speller's is lighter), both titles offer short descriptions of Athens's major landmarks (e.g., the Acropolis) but focus more keenly on sites not covered, or covered only briefly, in standard guidebooks. Only cursory coverage of eating places, hotels, and shops is provided, but the establishments mentioned are the authors' personal favorites and will likely offer travelers a unique experience. While neither book is practical as a traveler's sole guide to Athens, both would work well as supplements to more standard guides and are recommended for larger public library travel collections; Smith's book may also be of interest to academic libraries.-Rita Simmons, Sterling Heights P.L., MI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
