Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Chris A. Klenck, M.D., Pharm.D.(University of Tennessee at Knoxville)
Description: This comprehensive book details medical conditions observed in the elbow. Written by leading authorities in the field, it describes the full spectrum of pathologic anomalies while including developmental and functional information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide sports medicine physicians with a learning tool and reference for assessing elbow injuries. As recognized by the authors, many training programs are deficient in the amount of training and clinical experience for elbow pathology. With this in mind, the objectives are appropriate. The book delivers the information in a well-organized, complete format.
Audience: This book is targeted to sports medicine physicians, both primary care and orthopedic. It is an appropriate reference for residents, fellows, and sports medicine practitioners. In some cases, advanced students with an interest in sports medicine may benefit from this information. The authors have compiled a very useful book in their specialty.
Features: This is a comprehensive compilation of elbow function and pathology. The book initially provides a review of development, anatomy, function, and physical exam of the elbow joint. Imaging is briefly discussed including currently available diagnostic modalities. Following these introductory topics are several chapters dedicated to specific types and locations of injury. Rehabilitation and return-to-play are included for many of the pathologic conditions; this is very helpful for the practicing clinician.
Assessment: The book's usefulness as a comprehensive, up-to-date reference should prove invaluable. There is not an over-emphasis on surgical technique and primary care physicians in the sports medicine field should not hesitate to add this book to their library.
