Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Dani Moffit, MA, MPE, ATC (Temple University College of Health Professioins)
Description: This book provides information that will help athletic training students be successful when taking the BOC examination. It provides sample test questions in all three areas of the exam: written, written simulation, and oral practical. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The intent of this study guide is to assist the athletic training student in passing the BOC certification examination. It includes study techniques for exam preparation in addition to a general overview of the exam format. The book also provides an opportunity for students to experience a variety of questions related to what one might find on a certification exam. As a whole, the book meets the authors' objectives.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for athletic training students. I believe that the book also can help individuals teach athletic training students exam preparation and test-taking techniques. There is also valuable information designed to assist a student who has not passed the exam.
Features: The book has six major areas. The first area includes study and test-taking techniques. The second is general information and exam format. Three sections have sample questions covering each section of the exam: written, written simulation, and practical. A final chapter provides information for the individual who does not pass one or more parts of the exam. The strength of the book is that it provides a plethora of sample questions. The broadness of the questions allows the student to develop an understanding of what to expect on the exam. The written simulation provides a practice exam web site to allow the student to more closely simulate the exam format. The shortcoming is that the content delivery style may become somewhat obsolete by June of 2007, when the exam becomes computerized. At that time, all three sections will come together as one exam.
Assessment: This book can be very useful when preparing for the national exam. It doesn't just provide questions and answers. It provides strategies to help students plan and prepare for the exam, as well as what to do if the results aren't favorable. For students who need concrete evidence of what to expect, this is a book that provides it.
