Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Dr. Atkins broadens his scope to include lifestyle elements and a more middle-of-the-road attitude toward carbohydrates with this follow-up to the phenomenal bestseller Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. The main message here is, "people need to understand that what they eat has implications far beyond pounds and inches." Atkins still argues that the consumption of excess carbohydrates, which he believes to be the leading cause of overweight and obesity, is also a precursor for a host of medical conditions -- diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease among them. By figuring out one's ACE™ (Atkins Carbohydrate Equilibrium) and adopting the Atkins Lifestyle, readers can achieve a healthy weight and maintain it for life. Indeed, Atkins for Life delivers what the title promises -- a fine-tuning of the Atkins Diet that readers will be able to adopt for life.
Publishers Weekly
Atkins, cardiologist and founder of the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in New York City, has advocated his high protein/low carb diet regimen for some 30 years (Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution was published in 1972, and Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution in 1992). While fans of the butter-eggs-steak diet have long supported the Atkins program as a way of life, until this past year, the medical community has not warmly endorsed the plan. However, recent students show that the Atkins plan has enabled dieters to both lose and maintain their weight loss as well as reduce their cholesterol levels. This book, which can be used by people familiar with the Atkins plan as well as those who have not followed it, offers detailed questionnaires designed to help readers understand the preferred food choices. Particularly helpful are the charts of "eat regularly," "eat in moderation" and "eat sparingly." Some of the inclusions may surprise readers but Atkins offers explanations of which foods fall into the "higher carb" categories (potatoes, bananas, rice cakes) and therefore must be limited. First-person success stories are sprinkled throughout the book. The second half of the book includes a month's worth of meal plans, holiday menus, and 125 recipes for a variety of foods, including jerk shrimp, potato salad, brown rice pilaf, zucchini latkes, rhubarb applesauce and chocolate souffle. While this diet won't work for everyone, especially vegetarians, this guide is a comprehensive overview for dieters who are ready to embrace the Atkins philosophy. (Mar.) Forecast: With national print and broadcast advertising along with a TV/radio satellite tour, this book is sure to hit bestseller lists and re-ignite discussion over the continued increase in the number of overweight Americans and the safety and effectiveness of different diets. Atkins for Life

I have not read the book listed with this review, as yet, but have been on the Atkins diet for 10 months. I have lost 53 pounds and have never felt better. My health is great, including my blood levels, heart, and the rest of me. I plan on staying on this diet for life, as I have tried every other diet imaginable. I am 66 years old and have never felt or looked better. Thanks Dr. Atkins.

Someone who has been successful on the Atkins Diet

I started the Atkins diet in February of 2003. In six months, I lost 64 pounds. I have managed to stay at this weight for the past year without any weight gain, or without feeling food deprived. I will follow Atkins for Life from now on.

    Commonsense science

Greatly reduced fat levels and vastly improved cholesterol levels, and all based on a commonsense understanding of the insulin cycle? What more needs to be said? There are individual anamolies, but none of Dr. Atkins' tens of thousands of successful patients has exhibited any of the dire symptoms so warned about by "experts". They say he can't be trusted because there isn't volumes of research to back him up, but the same is true of their warnings, which they pull out of thin air: "it must be dangerous because (your reason here)". His biggest detractors have been an entrenched US medical establishment and the American people themselves, long inculcated to believe the scientifically groundless theory of "low-fat", which thirty years of research has failed to support. Since low-fat started being preached, bad health has only grown to epidemic proportions. I gained 20+ pounds on a low-fat diet, and when I switched to low-carb, it all went away in a matter of DAYS. Don't tell me he's a quack -- that title now belongs to anyone still preaching low-fat. You don't have to be a radical no-carber like Atkins, but at least you will recognize the true culprit. Atkins has hit the nail on the head of the entire 20th century-spectrum of diseases: weight gain, hypertension, heart disease and diabetes have been caused by excess dietary carbohydrates, not fat.

    Atkins for Life

I bought this book from the perspective of wanting to lose weight and learn more about low-carb living. I thought that this book was not a good choice for someone wanting an introduction to Atkins. This book approached the topic as though you already had some knowledge and in fact were already on the diet. This book focuses on staying on Atkins as a lifestyle. Even as I decided to eat less carbs, I didn¿t find the recipes in this book especially helpful as they were not something that I would want to cook.

    16 year old dieter

This diet is so horrible. I couldn't even last 3 days on it. Basically if you want to lose weight all you gotta do is eat less, exercise more. Simple as that. Don't waste your time on this diet because if you go back to eating carbs such as chocolate you will gain it all back faster than you lost it.

Don't Buy this Book for the Recipes

This book does a great job of throughly explaining the ins and outs of his diet. Don't buy the book for recipes, for many of the recipes you need to buy the 'Adkins' products.

My 30th Anniversary With Dr. Atkins

I believe with each new book, Dr. Atkins outdoes himself. In 1973, I was a 24yr. old mother of 3 little ones. At 5'4', I weighed 220lbs. I was given a copy of the first 'Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution'. I lost 90lbs. and in 30 yrs. have kept it off with minimal fluctuation in my weight. I, too, have occasionally tried other programs, but none have been as effective or satisfying as Dr. Atkins. While his new book DOES promote his products, I am thankful that he has provided them all. 'Back in the Day', the original Diet Revolution was more restrictive and you had to 'Make and Bake' all your own goodies. I am now 54yrs. old, in GOOD health with No diabetes, Low Cholesteral and a strong heart. Thank you Dr.Atkins, your contribution lives on.

Only thing that works for me

Last year, I had surgery and was 40 lbs overweight with my 35th Highschool reunion only 5 mos. away. I started Memorial Day w/Dr. Atkins and by Labor Day I was down 44 lbs. But, it looked like more. Around the holidays I was tempted and splurged w/cheese cakes and sweets and put on 12lbs over 5 mos. I thought I'd try the 'points' thing because you can have some sweets. Forget it, I stuck it out for 9 weeks and barely lost 8 lbs. So Dr. Atkins I am sorry I cheated on you and am back with you forever. I love the energy I have and indulging on sweets and breads is not worth it.

    It really works!

Dr. Atkins really know what he is doing. I've struggled with my weight all of my life. When my cholesterol was out of control at the age of 30 my doctor, yes my doctor, recommended I try Dr. Atkins diet. I endured much criticism from friends, co-workers and family but I stuck with the diet. After 8 months I had lost 50 pounds of fat and my cholesterol is impecable. I enjoy eating the way I do and I plan on staying on the Atkins maintenance diet to maintain my new healthy lifestyle. I really surprised all of those people that told me how unhealthy it was and how it wouldn't work. Most people seem to believe all you eat is meat on the diet which is far from the truth. I eat more vegetables than I ever ate before and my diet is much healthier than before. My energy level is sky high and I feel great. The best part is all of those horrible cravings for junk food go away! I highly recommend this book and this diet to everyone, even if you don't need to lose weight and just want to eat and feel healthier. My boyfriend didn't need or want to lose weight so he went right to the maintenance diet and he feels great -- not to mention his cholesterol has improved.

    Low Carber for Life!

Dr. Atkins has done a terrific job with this book. My husband and I have been following the Atkins lifestyle for nearly 5 years now and we've lost over 210 pounds and have kept it off. This book is a must for low carbers everywhere and will be a wonderful edition to help you achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle! I've never been very crazy about Dr. Atkins recipes but everything else in this book I highly recommend.

    Execellent Results with little work

Losing weight is not easy as anyone knows. You must be determined and set a goal for yourself. I found out that if you just cut back on some of the excess carbs that you don't need and exercise it makes a world of difference. Instead of eating 3 pieces of bread with dinner make it one, instead of 2 helpings of mashed potatoes have one, and no excess snacking. (which is probably the hardest part) If you have the will power, and can cut back, you will definitely loss weight. Depending how much weight you want to lose, and how fast, will determine what, and how you eat. Remember the best way to lose weight is to eat smaller portions and exercise. Now that I am to the weight that I want to be, a little splurge ever now and again will not hurt, as long as it stays every now and again.

Caring For Your Body, Mind, And Soul

Dear Fellow Reader, The Atkins system of eating for losing and maintaining the lower weight works. It's not a fad diet. While on crutches for many months due to an injury, my weight blew up by 35 lbs, putting me officially in the category known as obese. I started the Atkins 4-step system of eating, and, in a few months, I was back down to the normal weight for me, in fact, even a little on the pleasingly slim side. I couldn't believe it. It was like a miracle. For me, the most difficult part was not eating any bread. So, it DOES take some discipline. If you are into self improvement books, in general, like I am --- caring for your body, mind, and soul --- "Atkins For Life" is the one I think everyone should read regarding caring for your body. It's wonderful. The books I liked best regarding caring for the mind and soul are "West Point: Character Leadership" by Norman Thomas Remick, and, "The Purpose-Driven Life" by Rick Warren. Another book you might want to read regarding caring for the body is "Sugar Busters" by Leighton Stewart, et al. Caring for the body, mind, and soul are what life is all about, and what we in America should all do for ourselves, and pass on to our families, our friends, and our children. Best wishes,

    Bye Bye Fat

My dad lost 30 pounds in 3 months, I lost 55 pounds in 5 months. We both have never felt better. Don't confuse this as a diet as 'diet' is an ugly word. This is definately a wonderful new way of life.

With this book, I now understand maintenence and I feel I can truly live the "Atkins" way the rest of my life. This is his best work yet!! Thanks again Dr. Atkins

    Live and let diet!

I've been on the Atkins diet twice. I was a bad boy after the first time and gained everything back. However, that was my own fault for not following the diet for life method, documented in Atkins' earlier book. I'm back on it again. Lost 10 kilo (22 pounds) in 10 weeks. As was last time, my bloodtest results are the envy of everyone I know on a "more balanced diet". All of the doctors I know are beginning to highly recommend the Atkins Diet. Heck! Some of them are on the diet themselves! Atkins' biggest foes are the nutritionists. They keep parroting the same objections over and over in spite of contrary evidence. Yes, there are precautions. I pop various vitamins after breakfast and dinner. Drink a ton of liquids. Don't eat only red meat - you may get gout. If you're on constant medication or have existing serious health problems, consult your doctor or specialist first. Other than that, whoop it up! I will add that exercising regularly much improves losing weight. DUH! Well, just telling you couch potatoes - er - butterbars out there.

    GREAT WAY TO LOOSE WEIGHT!

I HAVE BEEN OVERWEIGHT ALL OF MY LIFE AND NOTHING THAT I DID EVER WORKED. I WAS ALWAYS HUNGRY ON THE OTHER DIETS AND DID NOT SEE ANY RESULTS AND LOST VERY LITTLE WEIGHT. ONCE I GOT OUT OF EATING CARBS I FOUND THAT I WAS NOT AS HUNGRY AND I LOST 8 LBS IN THE FIRST WEEK. THAT WAS GREAT FOR ME I SAW THE RESULTS QUICKLY AND THE INCHES CAME OFF FAST THOSE CAME OFF QUICKER THEN THE WEIGHT. MY CLOTHES WERE BECOMING VERY BIG AS I WAS GETTING SMALLER. MY PARENTS DID THIS DIET YEARS AGO WHEN THE WORLD SAID THIS WAS A BAD DIET AND MY MOM LOST 100LBS AND I HAVE LOST OVER 80LBS. IT IS FUNNY TO ME HOW NOW THE WORLD LOOKS AT THIS DIET AND SAYS THERE MAYBE SOMETHING TO THE LOW CARBS. IT IS GREAT AND I TELL EVERYONE TO TRY IT. YOU GET RESULTS QUICK. THANKS DR ATKINS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND KEEP THE GOOD FOODS COMING!
