Overview

Rhino delivers a second volume of Atlantic saxophone highlights, spotlighting some of the biggest names in jazz along the way. On the high end of the list, legends and innovators John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman cap off the album with a stellar side apiece. Representing the relatively obscure side of '50s and '60s jazz, the likes of Eddie Harris, David Newman, Yusef Lateef, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk range through a mix of hard bop, free jazz, soul-jazz, and even gospel. And for some very singular playing, there's tenorman Clifford Jordan playing a fine rendition of Horace Silver's "Señor Blues" and altoist Sonny Stitt showing his hot bop hand on "Parker's Mood." A excellent primer for the jazz saxophone curious.
