Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Carlos A Pelaez, M.D.(University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This atlas provides a step-by-step description of the key techniques involved in the management of abdominal wall hernias, including detailed anatomy, postoperative care, and management of adverse outcomes. The high-quality illustrations, photos, and online access to videos add a great visual understanding of the techniques.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide surgeons with options and new techniques to repair a variety of abdominal wall defects. It does this by providing a summary of the collaborative work involving multiple disciplines of surgery. This book meets its worthy objectives by providing safe and effective solutions to problematic hernias and other abdominal procedures. Furthermore, it simplifies the challenging task of choosing the appropriate mesh for various types of reconstruction.
Audience: This is an excellent resource for any surgeon who wants to learn new and efficient ways to manage difficult hernias. Dr. Rosen is a well-known expert in abdominal wall reconstruction, and this book is a great representation of his authority in the field.
Features: "The atlas details a diversity of minimally invasive, open, and hybrid techniques for abdominal wall reconstruction. It also explains the use of biologic and synthetic meshes, the difference between them, and their characteristics and clinical implications. The combination of high-quality intraoperative photos, illustrations and videos of key steps of the procedures clearly communicates the innovative surgical techniques, thus providing surgeons with the necessary skills to succeed. "
Assessment: Considering the inconsistent outcomes of older methods of simple patch repairs for large hernias and their recurrence rate of up to 50%, the newer techniques are preferred because of their application to larger defects and their lower recurrence rates. As these techniques have evolved over time, many authors have published their own results. However, this book is unique as it provides a summary of the collaborative work involving various disciplines of surgery, providing multiple options to surgeons for their patients' individual needs.
