Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Joseph I Sirven, MD(Mayo Clinic Arizona)
Description: This is an extraordinary book that features neurologic examination, visual exposition, and integration of all aspects of neurological diseases, the most common and most important, authored by experts in their fields. Each chapter in this new edition is revised and updated to reflect advances in neurology and the new understandings of gene structure and function and mutation in dominantly inherited diseases. Several hundred detailed images are provided as the framework for rational therapy in this edition.
Purpose: This is intended to provide essential information about neurologic diseases as well as comprehensive descriptions to achieve excellence in patient care. The quality and number of pictures, illustrations, data, and clinical presentations is phenomenal, as is the number of contributors.
Audience: The descriptive text for each disease and the detailed images are presented for self-instruction as well as for lecture presentation, providing highly useful educational material for students and teachers.
Features: All the major neurological disorders are discussed at length, including their clinical manifestations, descriptive neuroimaging, laboratory evaluation, pathology, and differential diagnoses. Also covered are disease management, medical and drug treatments, advised therapy, and long term recovery goals.
Assessment: This is a remarkable presentation. In addition to the quality text material, there is the truly extraordinary artistic offering of photographs, technical imaging, and descriptive evaluations.

This is a comprehensive atlas utilizing the different disciplines of medicine to provide the reader a well-rounded view of clinical neurology. It has achieved its goal in providing essential information about neurologic disease entities in an immediate and integrated manner. The atlas is primarily directed towards neurology residents and clinicians of all specialties taking care of patients with neurologic disorders, although it will be better appreciated by healthcare providers who have special interests in neurology. It uses a ""show and tell"" format, giving concise yet expository information regarding a disease entity effectively reinforced by an array of images, algorithms, tables, and schematic drawings. The inclusion of ongoing diagnostic and therapeutic trials makes this book invaluable to clinicians wishing to update their knowledge regarding recent trends in neurology. The overall layout allows a smooth transition from one disease entity to another. This is a very well written book deserving a place in every medical library and neurology resident call rooms. The combination of images and descriptive text makes it less intimidating and allows the reader to have better comprehension of common and not-so-common neurologic diseases. Although not a replacement for standard neurology textbooks, this is by far the most informative and user friendly atlas of clinical neurology. A CD-ROM version of the book will be an excellent alternative to a book this size and weight, and will provide quality teaching materials for lecturers.

A comprehensive pictorial exposition and integration of all aspects of neurologic disease, including clinical syndromes and related neuropathology, neuroradiology, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neurochemistry, and molecular biology. The descriptive text and collection of figures for each disorder provides a holistic visual concept of neurologic disease, enabling clinicians to generate a clear understanding of current thinking about pathogenesis of that disease, as well as a framework for rational therapy. 10.25x12.25<">.
