Description: This is an update to a comprehensive anatomic and surgical technique guide to benign and malignant gynecologic surgery last published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to present "a structured presentation of both the scientist's and the craftsman's view of the various abdominal, vaginal, endoscopic and senologic operations in our field." These are worthy objectives, given the increasing number of surgical modalities that gynecologic surgeons must master and the increasing technological complexity of the operating room. The authors present a comprehensive, well-organized book that meets the objectives.
Audience: Although the authors do not specify their intended audience, the book is written at a high level for residents and practicing gynecologists, and perhaps the most advanced, dedicated, and interested medical students. The authors are international leaders in their fields.
Features: The book includes general surgical principles, anatomy, and specific surgical technique guides, all organized by organ system. The "Operation Navigator" provides a convenient way for readers to search for a particular pathology, find indications for surgery, and then be directed to the preferred operation. Open surgical technique appears to be particularly well covered. The illustrations are in black and white and watercolor, which, the authors and I agree, is superior to photographs. However, color illustrations could make the complicated anatomic diagrams easier to understand.
Assessment: This is a high quality atlas that will be useful to any resident or practicing gynecologist. The new organization of this edition is a definite improvement over previous editions.
