Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD (Bridgeport Hospital)
Description: Da Vinci would be pleased to own this superbly illustrated atlas of hand and upper extremity anatomy. The text overflows with relevant information essential to the hand surgeon and student of this discipline.
Purpose: "Clearly, the purpose of this atlas is to shed light upon and open up the vistas of hand and upper extremity anatomy. Surgery of these areas requires a though knowledge of the anatomy and spatial orientation allowing the surgeon to achieve a balanced and functional outcome. All of these goals have been admirably achieved. "
Audience: "The three authors are well-versed in the subject at hand and have fashioned a didactic atlas replete with superb visual graphics that would benefit students, orthopedic and plastic surgery residents and clinicians wishing to extend their knowledge of the upper extremity and hand. "
Features: "More than eleven hundred drawings grace this atlas which is separated into four main subdivisions: Surface anatomy and integument; skeletal and articular systems of the hand; musculo-tendinous system; and the vascular system. Each of the 29 chapters overflows with charts, dramatically colored and illustrated representations of the hand or upper body anatomy. The authors are practical in their approach to each subject discussed and didactic without being heavy-handed. One would not entertain surgery on the hand without detailed descriptions of the procedures. Surgeons and surgeons-in-training would face a significant void if this text were not used as a reference and learning guide. "
Assessment: Hand specialists and those wishing to augment their knowledge on this subject will be pleasantly pleased with this notable atlas. It is a significant accomplishment in the field.
From the Publisher
"This superb book is written by three experienced and respected hand surgeons. It covers all aspects of hand surgical anatomy in 599 pages and 1130 full colour drawings, as well as the anatomy of the forearm, elbow, arm, shoulder and brachial plexus. ... This atlas of hand anatomy is in fact a comprehensive anatomical and physiological description of the upper limb. It is also a perfect basic introduction to hand surgery." —British Journal of Hand Surgery

"Intended for orthopedic and plastic surgery residents and medical students, this atlas provides 1,132 color illustrations and brief descriptions of the anatomic structures that comprise the hand, wrist, and arm. Separate units introduce surface anatomy, the skeletal and articular systems of the hand, the muscle system, the vascular system, and the nervous system of the upper limb. The vascular unit describes not only the arterial anatomy of the hand in great detail, but also outlines the anatomy of the venous and lymphatic drainage as complete circulatory systems. The authors are professors at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine and Stanford University." —SciTech Book News, June 2004

"This atlas should merit at least 'wish-list' status for students of hand anatomy. The book is attractive and is a nice size to carry into the operating room."
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, December 2004
