Description: This is the second edition of an atlas of the pathology of interstitial lung disease intended primarily as a quick reference rather than as a comprehensive textbook. The first edition was published in 2013.
Purpose: The purpose is to familiarize pathologists and pathologists in training with through extensive photomicrographs. There is a particular emphasis on morphological spectrum and differential diagnoses. Radiologic images are provided for correlation.
Audience: The primary audience is pathologists who are not lung specialists or who do not routinely deal with medical lung biopsies, as these entities are seen relatively infrequently. It is hoped that radiologists may also benefit from comparing pathologic changes to the radiologic images.
Features: The book is divided into chapters covering different interstitial lung diseases and disease categories. Additional chapters cover general approaches and additional considerations, imaging, and different ways of handling and interpreting biopsies. A typical chapter covering a disease includes short sections on definitions/nomenclature, etiologies, clinical and radiologic features, and pertinent molecular/genetic characteristics, before going into a lengthier description of the pathological features. There are many high-quality radiologic and microscopic pictures, the latter at varying magnifications and with detailed but succinct descriptions. Tables grouping information about pathologic, etiologic, and other features are provided where appropriate. Additional information regarding differential diagnosis, diagnostic modalities, and treatment and prognosis cap off the chapter. This edition has updated information on identifying chronic (fibrotic) hypersensitivity pneumonitis, as better medical management of this disease has led to increased importance of accurate identification of this entity. Other diseases have been described or better delineated and the book includes a review of the newly implemented transbronchial cryobiopsies. Information on new discoveries in molecular diagnosis and pathogenesis along with relative immunohistochemical staining is also provided. In addition to these updates, more illustrations and details on diseases from the first edition have been included where necessary.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for both new and experienced pathologists, although it is very useful for pathology residents as well. As the book acknowledges, with the relative rarity of these entities it can be difficult to find high quality pictures, much less multiple examples. Collecting not only classic examples but examples that run the morphologic spectrum and placing them alongside common mimickers is invaluable to any pathologist. Due to the overlap of these diseases, it can be difficult to navigate to the correct diagnosis. The authors take the time to go through the general morphology before homing in on the specific features that differentiate between each disease. Clinical and radiologic features are described concisely with an eye for what is significant for the pathologist to know, and the authors advise on how to report certain diseases to avoid clinician confusion and to ensure that what is being reported has prognostic or treatment utility. Overall, this is a practical and concise guide to a challenging and uncommon diagnostic category and is recommended for any pathologist or trainee who wants additional guidance on these entities.
