Overview

The mediastinum is a virtual compartment in the chest cavity that is the seat of several vital organs and structures that can be involved in a variety of pathologic processes, including congenital and developmental abnormalities, inflammatory conditions, and benign and malignant neoplasms. The Atlas of Mediastinal Pathology provides a pictorial survey of the major disease processes that can affect this anatomic compartment, including congenital and acquired cysts, benign hamartomatous processes, inflammatory processes involving the mediastinum, and benign and malignant neoplasms. The latter includes tumors of the thymus (thymoma and thymic carcinoma), neuroendocrine neoplasms, germ cell tumors, mesenchymal neoplasms, and hematolymphoid malignancies. The use of ancillary diagnostic methods is illustrated, where appropriate, providing assistance for pathologists in arriving at the correct diagnosis.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick reference guide for diagnosis and classification of benign, developmental, inflammatory, nonneoplastic, and neoplastic lesions that occur in the mediastinum. The editor is a world renowned expert in mediastinal pathology.
Audience: This book is intended primarily for pathologists in training and practicing surgical pathologists. It is also a useful resource for medical students, cytotechnologists, pathologist assistants, and other medical professionals with a special interest in mediastinal pathology.
Features: The first of the book's seven chapters covers reactive, developmental, inflammatory, and tumor-like conditions. Chapters 2-7 are dedicated to different neoplasms that occur in the mediastinum including thymic epithelial and neuroendocrine neoplasms, neurogenic tumors, soft tissue tumors, germ cell tumors, and lymphoproliferative disorders. Each chapter starts with a brief introduction followed by a number of gross and microscopic images of different conditions accompanied by brief descriptions. The quality of most gross and microscopic images is excellent. The book contains useful tables and lists of references at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: For pathologists seeking a quick reference of mediastinal pathology, this book offers a nice and concise presentation of different benign and malignant conditions that occur in the mediastinum. Therefore, it is certainly a valuable contribution to the field. It is not intended as a comprehensive resource and it does not explore every topic in detail. However, it will nicely complement larger textbooks of mediastinal pathology. It also can be used as a quick learning tool for residents who are studying for board examinations or for practicing pathologists who are preparing for recertification exams. This atlas should be widely distributed in departmental libraries.
