Description: This updated, revised, and expanded version of the 1992 edition is the global positioning system of the human body. Clearly written with lifelike color drawings, this book should accompany microvascular surgeons on their reconstructive quest.
Purpose: The authors wished to provide a comprehensive approach to the harvesting and utilization of flaps for microvascular reconstruction that practicing micro-vascular surgeons could effortlessly understand and use. Without question, they have fashioned a book worthy of these aspirations.
Audience: Although not directly stated, the book is undoubtedly intended for reconstructive microvascular surgeons, either new or experienced. The anatomical drawings and topographical depictions could also assist students wishing to increase their knowledge base.
Features: A cursory introduction highlights definitions, basic microsurgical and harvesting techniques, flap designs, and insights. Then the real depth of this book becomes apparent. Each chapter is artistically illustrated to demonstrate the stepwise techniques necessary to harvest flaps for microvascular reconstruction. Relevant anatomy (bone, muscle, skin and neurovascular structures) are elucidated in a cogent and easy to absorb manner. Harvesting techniques, flap variables, and insightful comments regarding clinical application and design of the flaps characterize each of the 12 chapters. The array of flaps presented literally spans the gamut from head to foot with the inclusion of back, neck, chest, arm, and neck flaps. This book has successfully addressed the chasm between wishing to reconstruct an area of the body and actually showing how to do it.
Assessment: Readers will be indebted to the authors for updating and enlivening this book with useful and well articulated information. Challenges that face microvascular surgeons will be easier to overcome with this atlas in hand.
