Reviewer: Katie L Dennis, MD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is an extensive atlas of orthopedic pathology that contains concise reviews of both metabolic and neoplastic entities, along with accompanying radiographs and gross and microscopic pictures. The first edition was published in 1990.
Purpose: It is intended as an introduction to orthopedic pathology, in order for residents of related specialties to learn about clinical, radiologic and pathologic features of orthopedic diseases. This is an excellent color atlas and introduction to the complicated subject of orthopedic pathology.
Audience: This book is targeted to students and residents in pathology, orthopedics, and radiology. The concise descriptions written in outline form make it very conducive for studying purposes and are most helpful to beginning learners.
Features: The book is divided into two main sections: metabolic/inflammatory/developmental conditions and tumors and tumor-like conditions. These sections are further divided into related entities within each category. Each disease is broken down into a concise outline form, and covers clinical symptoms, radiographic presentation and differential diagnosis, gross and microscopic descriptions, pathologic differential diagnosis, treatment, and references in two to three pages. Each entry also has accompanying radiographs and color histologic images. The inclusion of differential diagnoses in both radiologic presentation and microscopic description are most helpful, and a reflection of the importance of both radiology and pathology in diagnosing orthopedic diseases.
Assessment: This will serve as a good introduction to orthopedic pathology covering basic clinical, radiological, and pathologic features, and gives appropriate references for further in-depth study. Compared to other atlases and the previous edition, the high-quality color pictures are a helpful improvement. This text is more concise than other atlases, and the smaller size, and well-organized outline form makes it an excellent tool for studying purposes. This book will be most helpful to beginning learners, and those looking for a concise review for study.
