From The CriticsReviewer: Ramsis Farid Ghaly, MD, FACS (Ghaly Neurosurgical Associates)
Description: This is the second edition of an atlas that provides illustrations and descriptions of various surgical approaches to all peripheral nerve surgeries as performed by the authors, who are considered the fathers of this field. The previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose: This edition incorporates advances in the field since the previous edition and features a new layout as well as access to an online version with a downloadable image library.
Audience: The intended audience includes neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, and all peripheral nerve surgeons.
Features: The book is divided into three major sections with hundreds of color illustrations. It describes each surgical technique step-by-step. The first section concentrates on the nerves of the upper extremity, with illustrative anatomy, function, and surgical approaches. Similarly, the second section illustrates the lower extremity nerves. The third section describes surgical techniques such as the resection of nerve tumors, neurolysis, nerve split, graft and transfers, and nerve action potential. The authors describe in detail surgical dissections step-by-step in cadavers and on patients, supplemented with illustrative diagrams. Peripheral nerve surgeons can study the spectacular illustrations the night before and take them to the operating theatre. The book is especially useful in explaining the anatomy of the peripheral nervous system and the function of each nerve with illustrations of how to test each nerve and the function of each muscle.
Assessment: This is a simple, straightforward, illustrative reference. It is exclusively the authors' experience and approaches and, since the authors have spent their lives dedicated to the field, their experiences are unlimited. There are no references or bibliography. This is a great reference for all surgical practitioners in this field.
