Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
For middle readers just beginning a serious study of geography and cartography, this "World Atlases" series offers eight volumes of colorful maps showing the seven continents and the polar regions. Each book has thirteen double-page spreads, starting with an introduction to map conventions and symbols (compass rose, legend, tropics, the equator, scale bar). In this volume, Antarctica and the Arctic each have a spread mapping the areas inside the Antarctic and Arctic Circles, showing the poles and oceans, the Antarctic land mass, Arctic pack ice, and countries surrounding the North Pole. Other spreads present maps of polar ecosystems, including a selection of animals and plants that have adapted to the regions, such as penguins and lichens in Antarctica and ermine, musk ox, and arctic poppies in the Arctic. "People of the Polar Regions" include the Inuit of Canada and Greenland, the Sami of northern Europe, and the Chukchi of Arctic Russia. Double-page spreads about the three other oceans—Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian—introduce some plants and animals of those oceans, describe the ocean floor and ocean climate, and offer a section about protecting poles and oceans from oil spills, other pollution, and the effects of global warming. As a finale, the last spread takes readers on an icy journey to the North Pole in the icebreaker ship Yamal. Summing it all up is a final page of brief polar and ocean facts and a glossary.
