On July 9, 2011, all print and online atlases became obsolete with the newly gained independence of South Sudan. Unfortunately, none of the major atlases had even indicated that area as an autonomous region after it was created through a 2005 peace agreement. True to the publisher's commitment to annual revisions of its premium atlas, this update of the 2010 edition features South Sudan in all political and physical maps, as well as independent Montenegro and Kosovo and demarcation of the de facto states of Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia, and Somaliland. Maintaining the format of the previous edition, the atlas offers 179 pages of full-color, computer-generated political and topographical maps by Philip's, with dramatic, detailed terrain modeling. A separate city-map section covers 69 major international metropolitan areas, most featuring close-up maps of city centers. A lengthy gazetteer provides ready reference information arranged alphabetically for both independent states and dependencies, with data boxes, country summaries, and current official flags, including that of South Sudan and the new designs for Malawi and Myanmar (Burma). More than 70 world and regional thematic maps accompanied by illustrations and text explore topics from the food crisis to demographics and from economics to the environment. The "Images of Earth" section presents 17 stunning, full-page satellite photos—nine of them are new to this edition, including those depicting Christchurch, New Zealand, and Juba, South Sudan.
