Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This multiauthored book provides illustrations and succinct descriptions of operative procedures in the discipline of acute care surgery.
Purpose: It is intended as a tool for review and preparation for surgical procedures.
Audience: Acute care surgeons of all degrees of sophistication are an appropriate audience for this work produced by leading practitioners in North America with selected contributions from international authorities.
Features: The book is organized by body region, beginning with head and neck and continuing through torso, pelvic, and extremity procedures. A typical chapter describes important incisions for the region followed by key anatomic and clinical aspects of procedures. While photographs are used, the majority of illustrations are color drawings which reproduce with excellent quality. In addition to describing procedures by body region, the book also includes strategies for resuscitative thoracotomy and bedside procedures including gut access and tracheostomy. Each chapter contains a small number of references, typically from primary literature, describing clinical data relative to the procedure. The table of contents groups chapters by body region and lists authorship, while a detailed subject index of six pages includes separate citations for figures.
Assessment: With the supplemental material on a companion website, this atlas is an important contribution to the acute care surgery literature. I expect that subsequent editions will include additional material on compartment syndromes and rib stabilization. The degree of detail varies in the text accompanying illustrations and there is clearly room for additional illustrations without increasing the length of the book. An older, though more detailed, trauma atlas is Operative Trauma Management: An Atlas, 2nd edition, Thal, et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2002).

"TheAtlasis an excellent reference material aimed at senior level surgical residents and fellows, as well as an excellent review for practicing general surgeons. I would recommend this book to upper level general surgical residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons who include trauma and emergency general surgery as part of their practice."
