Children's Literature - Paula Rohrlick
Part of the "Wendy's Weather Warriors" series, this easy-to-read chapter book focuses on the dangers of flash floods. Wendy, an elementary school student, lives in Circleville, in the Texas panhandle, and she and her amateur meteorologist friends Dennis and Jessica have formed a Weather Warriors club. It's been very dry lately, and while the town needs rain, Wendy hopes it won't spoil the ceremony to open the new middle school. The dedication takes place, but just as it's ending the skies open up and it pours. The driver of the school van transporting Wendy and her friends takes a shortcut down Old River Road, beside a formerly dry riverbed that's now full of rushing water, and a car is caught in the flood. Wendy and her friends help get the driver to safety, and later they make a safety video so that people will know how to avoid flash floods. "Did You Know?" information at the end provides more information about flash floods, along with "Flood Myths," an experiment to try, and safety tips. While this information may be useful, the story itself is didactic and unappealing, and the murky black-and-white illustrations don't help. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick
