Overview

Updating and expanding Russell Barkley's Handbook, this new second edition incorporates the latest findings on the nature, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As in the previous edition, Dr. Barkley includes contributions from other leading scientist-practitioners, who report on their respective areas of expertise. Readers will find current, practical information on nearly every aspect of the disorder. In-depth assessment and treatment guidelines are supported by updated documentation on outcomes, and three new chapters focus specifically on adults.

"...includes the latest findings on the nature, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of ADHD...with selected chapters written by experts in the field, providing clear guidelines for practice in clinical, school, and community settings." Appropriate for: Adolescent Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists.

Editorial Reviews

Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology

"The standard reference in the field....Barkley''s...theory of ADHD brings together his own vast knowledge of ADHD and other areas--developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental neuropsychology, then bridges the deficits commonly found in ADHD with the broad area of executive functions. He is quite aware that he is breaking new ground, and that there is speculation in his formulations. But we are grateful he has put his good mind to developing this area. Having a theory to develop and test is a welcome development in this field....Because of Barkley''s focus on executive functions, he is likely to bring some clarity to this often murky area....This book should be on every neuropsychologist''s shelf. It gives the most complete up-to-date review of known research on ADHD."--Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology

Canadian Journal of Psychiatry

"This is a readable, up-to-date standard reference book for anyone studying ADHD or practising in the field of ADHD. This edition well reflects the substantial advances in the field."—[ital]Canadian Journal of Psychiatry[/ital] (Derryeck Smith, Vol. 52, No. 2, Feb. 2007)

Journal of Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

"A good reference book to keep in one''s personal library, and a definite place needs to be found in departmental libraries."--Journal of Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

"A much needed and anticipated addition to any practicing clinician''s library....The book is very well written, well edited, and well referenced....This new edition is a compelling update to a vast and ever-growing literature on a very prevalent, potentially devastating disorder. We highly recommend this book to clinicians and investigators in mental health."--Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases

"The field cries out for an authoritative handbook and this need has been filled by Russell Barkley, an undoubted leader as well as a pioneer in the field....This is a valuable resource for students and professionals, and for those family members looking for a comprehensive text. It is accompanied by a clinical workbook."--Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease

PsycCRITIQUES

"This Handbook and Workbook are invaluable reference volumes and should be on the bookshelves of all mental health professionals who work (or perform research) with children, adolescents, and/or adults with ADHD....Does not disappoint as the ultimate, authoritative reference for both researchers and clinicians....Most important, the Workbook includes a limited photocopy license that gives users permission to duplicate the instruments for use with their patients or clients. Over time, clinicians will find that the ability to do so will allow this set to pay for itself many times over....This volume is a major addition to the scientific literature about ADHD. Its depth and breadth is second to none, and every area discussed within the Handbook is treated exhaustively. The reviews of relevant research are focused, balanced, current, and highly relevant. The inclusion of expanded content about the assessment and treatment of ADHD in adults is a highly welcomed addition that will increase the appeal of these highly popular volumes."--PsycCRITIQUES

From The Critics
Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM(Abbott Laboratories)
Description: This is the third edition of the definitive source book for ADHD by one of the foremost authorities. This updated edition is a timely publication covering the advances in the study of ADHD and is written by numerous experts in the field.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide readers with needed and practical information on ADHD supported by empirical research findings as well as real-world clinical experience. Considering the prevalence of ADHD, this book fills the need for a definitive resource and guidebook for all practitioners.
Audience: Both seasoned and newly minted clinicians will find this book beneficial. More importantly, the utility of this book as a standalone teaching tool cannot be overstated and graduate students and residents will benefit.
Features: This well written book provides a strong foundation on the history, symptoms, criteria, comorbidity, and etiology of ADHD. The editor's chapter on a theory of ADHD is a must read. Contributing authors provide their views and information on assessment and treatment. Among the notable authors are George DuPaul, Thomas Spencer, Tim Wilens, and Joseph Biederman. The illustrations and examples are terrific. Chapter 10 stands out with its 10 clinical cases with various degrees of complexity. A separate clinical workbook is available to aid therapists and their clients.
Assessment: This the definitive book by the definitive authority. This is the ultimate teaching tool for all ADHD clinicians.
Booknews
An updated, expanded, and substantially rewritten version of a 1981 handbook. (The new edition includes chapters by contributors selected for particular areas of expertise.) The purpose is to present as much practical information as possible, rather than to give an exhaustive or critical review of the research literature. Coverage includes differential diagnosis, a developmental model for assessment, family systems interventions, training parents of ADHD adolescents, and ADHD in adults. Annotation c. Adult ADHDers please read this book

Dr. Barkley has written an accurate informative book with a different perspective than the usual'self-help' titles aimed at this disorder. As the title indicates, this book was written for professionals diagnosing and treating ADHD. However, it is informative, thought-provoking, and disabuses readers of the perception that ADHD is not a serious problem. If you want to know the facts about ADHD, include Dr. Barkley's book on your list of 'must reads.'
