Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Rall's third effort in the Attitude series turns its focus to online cartooning, a somewhat nebulous field that Rall has only middling success corralling into a book. There is a basic contradiction involved with publishing Web material in print: if the medium is viable, why does the work need a book? But that speculative question aside, this is a decent massing of some young cartoonists who practice the gag-a-day format in cyberspace. Most are no different from what one might see in a local alternative weekly, with unremarkable but competent drawings, generic gags and so on. But there are a couple of standouts: Nicholas Gurewitch's funny, surreal comics come from a personal, highly idiosyncratic place, as do Ryan North's, who has taken a clip art approach to gags. It's still unclear how these comics benefit from being online, as they don't use any of the features the Web offers (besides nearly free space), nor is it clear if the Web breeds a new kind of cartoon sensibility. Attitude 3 is an entertaining but random assortment of artists who happen to publish on the Web. (July) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
VOYA - Sophie Brookover
The twenty-one interviews and accompanying artwork in this third volume chronicling the world of "subversive online cartoonists" leap from the page and grab the reader by the lapels. Every animinterview is a lively window on the motivations, artistic and political background, and creative process of its subject, and each is fascinating. Even if one is not a fan of Eric Millikin's furious, mordantly funny, horror-influenced comics, for example, one will be interested to learn about how he came to draw Fetus-X on ripped-out notebook pages, rather than in traditional, square panels. If the artists whom series editor Rall has corralled for this title are not particularly diverse politically or ethnically (all but one are left-leaning, white men-the lone female artist is a lefty Caucasian as well), they are wildly diverse artistically. Some draw their comics by hand and then scan and upload them, whereas others are exclusively digital. One team employs a sophisticated woodblock print style, while another uses simple clip art; one artist's characters are animals, while another creates short films using Flash. By and large, these cutting-edge cartoonists share another trait: disappointingly few of them are able to make a viable independent living through their art. Interview after interview features a variation on the theme of "I can't quit my day job." Artist contact information and a bibliography conclude this quick-reading volume. This anthology should find avid readers among comics fans in public and high school libraries.
