Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - John D. Orsborn
You can hear the whine of their engines on some of the most difficult terrain or on a farm. ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) have many uses. Their original use was for fun and to get to hard places. Over time that has changed, and many new and varied uses for these small but powerful machines have been found. As with all vehicles, one of the uses found for ATVs is racing. The Baha 1000 is the most famous of off road races. In this volume of the "Horse Power" series, Mandy Marx provides younger readers and low-level readers an opportunity to discover the ATV. While describing the varied uses of the ATV, the author focuses mainly on the racing. The main components of an ATV are described, as well as the safety issues surrounding these vehicles. As with all "Blazers" books, small information balloons are dispersed throughout the text. One balloon describes how the three-wheel ATV was discontinued due to its safety and tendency to overturn. While an interesting book, there is not as much excitement conveyed in the text as is typical of Mandy Marx' nonfiction books. Many students reading this book now would not remember that there have ever been three wheel ATVs, but might have their curiosity piqued by such facts. A glossary in the back and further reading resources complete this interesting book. Interestingly, not only does it include specific Web sites, but it also includes the "Fact Hound" site and instructions for doing research—a librarians dream.
