Overview

Young life in Northwest Texas during the Great Depression and World War II was totally unlike today's childhood experience. A veteran of that earlier time sets out to describe to a younger generation what his life then was like.

He soon discovers, though, that generation gaps are not limited to the modern day. His own parents, he learns, were themselves shaped by events beyond their control when they were young. His father's family life many years before was drastically impacted by world events that reached rural Texas and Oklahoma with powerful force. The consequences of World War I were major for two rural Texas families and changed their lives forever. The search for answers to questions raised by actors in those decades-old events gives the narrator insight into his own family and his own character.

Anyone who grew up in the 1930s and 1940s, or whose parents or grandparents lived then, will find these stories evocative of older and different times in American life.
