Overview

The architect of the Obama campaign reveals how it all happened- and how it will revolutionize our politics

David Plouffe not only led the effort that put Barack Obama in the White House, but he also changed the face of politics forever and reenergized the idea of democracy itself. The Audacity to Win is his story of that groundbreaking achievement, taking readers inside the remarkable campaign that led to the election of the first African American president.

For two years Plouffe worked side by side with Obama, charting the course of the campaign. His is the ultimate insider's tale, revealing both the strategies that delivered Obama to office and how the candidate and campaign handled moments of great challenge and opportunity. Moving from the deliberations about whether to run at all, through the epic primary battle with Hillary Clinton and the general election against John McCain, Plouffe showcases the high-wire gamesmanship that fascinated pundits and the drama and intrigue that captivated a nation.

The Audacity to Win chronicles the arrival of a new moment in American life at the convergence of digital technology and grassroots organization, and the exciting possibilities revealed by a campaign that in many ways functioned as a $1 billion start-up with laser-like focus and discipline. In this extraordinary book, David Plouffe unfolds one of the most important political stories of our time, one whose lessons are not limited to politics, but reach to the greatest heights of what we dream about for our country and ourselves.

Editorial Reviews

Michiko Kakutani
While Mr. Plouffe doesn't serve up a lot of news and obviously retraces lots of familiar ground…he gives readers a visceral sense of the campaign from an insider's point of view. And while reporters and political analysts have long since deconstructed the reasons for Team Obama's win…Mr. Plouffe provides a detailed and revealing account of exactly how he and Mr. Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, created and executed the blueprint that turned the junior senator from Illinois—this "skinny guy from the South Side with a funny name," as the candidate once described himself—into a formidable political force who redrew the electoral map and defeated the huge, clanking Clinton and G.O.P. machines.
—The New York Times
From The Critics
Plouffe, Barack Obama's campaign manager for the 2008 presidential run, gives a behind-the-scenes look in the "how we did things right" style in this comprehensive work that covers the beginning (will he or won't he run) to the homestretch of the general election. Details include the pros and cons considered during the selection of the vice president. Actor Erik Davies reads in a soft-spoken manner, his voice occasionally filled with wonder at the awesome job of running a grass-roots campaign for the first African American presidential candidate to be nominated by a major party. Recommended for general and academic audiences interested in the background of a paradigm shift in political campaigning. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 7/09.—Ed.]—Deb West, Gannon Univ. Lib., Erie, PA

    I Also Recommend:

    How Obama Won

This is an outstanding book on the 2008 presidential campaign by the one person who not only knew everything about it, but also managed the whole thing from the beginning: David Plouffe, Obama's campaign manager. The narrative is clear and straight-forward, making it an easy read for anyone who is interested in how the electoral strategy is formed. I also think that this will be a great book for political scientists and historians to study when doing research on two outgrowths of Plouffe's strategy in this election: massive grassroots organizing and the impact of the internet and social networking on campaigns. Both of these played a major role throughout the whole campaign and allowed the Obama team to run the table in a lot of states that were solid holds for Republicans in the last two presidential elections. Plouffe's personal stories of campaign life also give necessary levity to a rather serious-minded book, helping the reader to relive the campaign one more time. However, I give this book only four stars because Plouffe has a top down view throughout. Although he is effusive in his praise for all the grassroots volunteers and statewide staffs, it still seems like something is missing without more details about how the grassroots movements sprouted and stayed afloat throughout the long campaign. This could probably be remedied by a book written by a statewide manager or an anthology of personal stories by grassroots volunteers and statewide staff on their campaign experiences. In summation, this is a fine book for anyone who wants the inside story on how Sen. Obama became Pres. Obama.

    Great Book!

This a wonderful book for those that were involved in the Obama for America campaign. It gives wonderful insider information on what was happening behind the scenes. Even if you weren't a part of the campaign, it is a chance to see how we changed the electorate and gives lessens for picking a course and following through.

The definitive diary on the Obama campaign

President Barack Obama's historic political campaign deserves to be studied for its innovative organization, volunteer effort, fundraising and use of technology. But it is also a compelling story about an unlikely candidate and the highly motivated expert team that pulled off one of the greatest game-changing upsets in U.S. political history. Obama campaign manager David Plouffe (rhymes with "bluff") has written a diary-like firsthand account that delivers insights and perspectives previously known only to insiders. While he tells his story chronologically, the suspense builds as internal and external opponents battle and fall by the wayside. getAbstract recommends this engrossing David-and-Goliath story to leaders, political aficionados, technology and media buffs, and anyone interested in overcoming huge odds to become a winner.

    Inside the Campaign

David Plouffe completes a thorough writing of the strategies used in the Obama 2008 campaign. His complete openess giving the actual utterances of the people, the behind-the-scenes planning and the grueling schedules and travel is refreshing. No spin here - just the truth as he saw and lived it.

The book includes all the trials and suggestions considered - as well as their use or being discarded. Mostly, it was revealing and important to read of the interaction of the personnel and to learn of the quality of character of the candidate.

Any student of history, politics, or cultural studies should read this book. It is complete with modern technologies being applied in an innovative manner to achieve a goal that had never been attained before using the methods described.

    Textbook, not novel

i've read a lot of campaign books; this one re-wrote the code by which candidates - if they have the character, intelligence and heart/soul to serve in office for the right reasons, can get to their goal. ignore reading this at your peril. it is the blueprint for winning elections for the foreseable future.....

    Reading the Kool Aid

I was hoping for a little more insight into one of the most successful campaigns in US political history. Then I realized that everyone involved will likely be running again in 2012, so it is very hard to be candid. Certain themes tend to repeat themselves (grass roots, discipline, sticking to the plan, no drama...) And often and there are many "aww shucks" moments that are cheesy. Very easy read if you are at the airport.
