Your Honor and the People,

Based on the evidence supplied by the prosecution, I am compelled by the highest and most rigorous psychiatric and criminological standards to offer the court an informed opinion upon which it can in confidence rule.

As an expert in the field of criminology, I agree wholly with the prosecution's argument that the defendant, XXXXXX XXXXXX, killed XXXXXX XXXXXXX. Although there is no physical evidence to confirm this, the fictional works left behind by the defendant clearly shows that, though both men’s minds were progressively wrought by chronic ambiguity and an inability to discern right from wrong, it was the defendant who clearly displayed a greater inclination toward violence. Furthermore, while both men exhibited an inability to recognize the boundary that separated their own sexual makeup, a sexual makeup that negated the security and trust required for friendship, it was the defendant who demonstrated the traits of a predatory character.

I thereby urge the court to consider a close reading of a work of “art” by the defendant’s hand that has been presented as evidence—a story about a stalker that exhibits a flagrant disregard and abusive twisting of civilization’s highest moral codes and a simultaneous rationalization and aestheticization of stalking.

Let me remind the court that the world of the arts, which both men inhabited, is a province that too often shelters diseased and criminal minds with the trust of a tolerant if gullible and too-liberal society simply because they are artists. It is therefore easy to imagine art itself being used to prop up and reinforce the antisocial inclinations of both men for so long and without the notice of their families, friends, and colleagues.
