Charles Shurtleff graduated from the Yale University School of Drama, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree. Then, he started work in the theater as a casting director and production assistant for William Hammerstein in 1957 through 1960, working on musicals for the New York City Center. Shurtleff served on Broadway as casting director on David Merrick Productions including "Gypsy" (1959), "Irma La Douce," "A Taste of Honey," "Becket," and "Do Re Me" (1960), "Carnival!" (1961), "Stop the World I Want to Get Off" (1962), "Oliver!" (1963), "1776" (1969), "Jesus Christ, Superstar" (1971), "Pippin" (1972), and "Chicago" (1975).


In addition to casting the films "All the Way Home" (1963), "The Sound of Music" (1965), "The Sand Pebbles" (1966), and the film version of "Jesus Christ, Superstar" (1973), Shurtleff wrote screenplays and directed "Call Me by My Rightful Name" (stage 1963, film 1973). He also cast the critically acclaimed television series starring George C. Scott and Cicely Tyson, "East Side/West Side" (1963), and the brilliant casting of Dustin Hoffman as the lead in the film "The Graduate" (1975).

Still up-to-date a generation later...and a great foundation for the young performer.

Audition has become a standard textbook in many acting classes. I can understand why. I picked up the book on the shelf at my local Barnes and Noble, not knowing exactly what it was. After reading a couple of chapters, I had to finish the book. I am a director, musical director, actor and singer. I also teach voice. The process that Michael Shurtleff takes the reader through to prepare a monologue for an audition also works for creating a strong character and strong musical interpretation once you have a part. Singers can also benefit from his techniques to create a riveting vocal performance. His anecdotes and advice from experience gives the reader an honest perspective from someone on an audition panel. After casting over 20 shows, I have experienced first hand what he explains (the good and the not-so-good). I have given it as a gift to young actors in a summer camp, and have recommended it to cast members and auditioners for years.

Good quick read to prepare the unprepared for an audition. Just a little outdated and hard to follow the old school examples, unless you know 1970s theater.

I really wish I'd read this before I jumped back into theatre after a 30-year absence! Only after a clueless audition (which resulted in being cast--go figure!) did I find the book. And then I signed up for a short course in audition preparation, and whatya know? This book was suggested as the best possible resource for successful auditioning. It's tone is conversational, and sprinkled throughout are anecdotes about early auditions of major stars of movies and the theatre. But the actual meat of the book is presented in a straightforward manner. Great resource for actors of any kind!

The book may have been written back in the 90's but the material is still up to date. It was very helpful with helping me figure out what I have been doing wrong. This book also helped to boost my confidence when it comes to auditioning.

This is the best auditioning book ever! Michael Shurtleff is a theatre genious as far as I'm concerned! I would recomend this book to everyone! Not only is it helpful in theatre related situations but also for job interviews and public speaking. So go buy it... like now!

The best book on auditioning ever published. If one is serious about a career in Entertainment, you would be a fish out of water without the information Michael Shurtleff has included here. Experienced, clear, smart and a good entertaining read, AUDITION has everything!
