Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up-- At first glance this new edition looks pretty much like the dozen other mid-level Bibles around (in between picture books and the complete text). But it warrants a second look. Based on the NRSV, its selections are minimally abridged (as a ``story bible,'' it omits all but two Psalms and much other material). The copious illustrations, full-page and vignettes, are detailed, realistic, attractive (without overwhelming the text) and in lively color. Close examination reveals further virtues. First, there is an individual style to the art that distinguishes it from the run-of-the-mill. Second, the artist's solid research is unobtrusively but impressively evident in the careful depiction of clothing, ancient Middle Eastern physiognomy, and a wealth of household and ceremonial objects. Last but most memorable is the revelation of an imagination both sensitive and striking. The angels on Jacob's ladder extend prayer-shawl wings; Moses's burning bush has seven menorahlike branches aflame; Job's suffering is based on a photo from the Warsaw ghetto; the Good Samaritan and Sermon on the Mount accompany pictures of Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, St. Francis, et al. Giving new life to biblical imagery, Fuchshuber affirms its spiritual power. This, then, is not just another children's bible, but an edition to celebrate.
