Overview

As a young girl in Scotland during World War II, Audrey McKinley is captivated by the accents of servicemen whom her father brings home, and she is fascinated with tales of travel she hears from her mysterious aunt. She uncovers a family secret, however, and will spend decades trying to unravel the truth. Audrey marries an American serviceman and travels to Japan, Guam and America's Deep South. Political and social changes, along with the quest to come to terms with her family roots, govern the choices Audrey makes for her children and for herself. Eventually she settles in South Carolina and discovers Edisto Island-a place where hearts can heal and souls can mend. There is only one thing left that Audrey must do to put her life in order. She must solve the puzzle and understand the meaning of what happened in Scotland more than sixty years earlier.

Ms. Jones takes the reader effortlessly through a sixty year time period in history and across several continents. She uses music throughout the book, which is an interesting touch, and relates the climate of society and how this effects the choices that Audrey, the main character, makes in her life. It is a compassionate story about the importance of family and the strength of motherhood. I highly recommend this book!

Auld Lang Syne: A Novel by first-time author Donna Jones is a signficant contribution to the history of the world from the 1940's to the 1990's. It easily navigates the significant changes that occurred in Scotland and the United States as the world adjusted from the turbulent period of the second world war to the relative peace and prosperity of the 50's and early 60's. The main character, Audrey, is a rich and complex woman but she maintains the appeal of every daughter, mother and spouse. As Audrey journeys through the decades and from continent to continent, she never loses her humanity, graciousness, and charm. The book ends with an interesting twist as the reader discover a long-held secret about Audrey's roots. This novel is captivating, original, and satisfying. I recommend it highly!
