Everyone's favorite supernatural detective steps in to thwart unchivalrous deeds at a Renaissance fair

With Penguin's Fall 2009 publication of Introducing Aunt Dimity, Paranormal Detective certain to attract new readers to the popular cozy series, Aunt Dimity Slays the Dragon is poised as the perfectly irresistible gem that will leave them eager for more. After living in the small English village of Finch for eight years, Lori Shepherd longs for some excitement to spice up her all-too-familiar routine. So when a Renaissance festival complete with wizards, wenches, knights, and jesters sets up in town for the summer, Lori gets her wish-and more. She soon discovers a sinister stalker, a jealous saboteur, and an evil assassin behind the scenes of King Wilfred's Faire, and it's up to Lori-with Aunt Dimity's otherworldly guidance-to prevent the medieval revelry from ending in modern-day tragedy.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The charm has begun to wear a bit thin in Atherton's 14th paranormal cozy to feature U.S. ex-pat Lori Shepherd (after 2008's Aunt Dimity: Vampire Hunter). Lori, despite the sage advice of ghostly Aunt Dimity, remains somewhat feckless and immature, still relying on snap judgments instead of reasoned thought, as she sticks her nose into the affairs of others in the idyllic Cotswolds village of Finch. When Calvin Malvern (aka King Wilfred the Good) arrives with his motley crew for a Renaissance faire to be held on land belonging to his uncle, Lori's neighbor, many of the villagers enter into the spirit of the thing, including Lori, who can't resist the thought of playing dress up. Odd accidents befall King Wilfred, and Lori begins to wonder about sabotage and regicide. Hardcore fans will no doubt enjoy the froth, but newcomers may find it a bit too precious. (Feb.)

Kirkus Reviews
The advent of a Renaissance fair rouses village sleuth Lori Shepherd (Aunt Dimity: Vampire Hunter, 2008, etc.) from her boredom with costumes, rituals and contemporary felonies. The quiet English village of Finch is gearing up for the usual summer activities when Calvin Malvern, aka King Wilfred, arrives to announce that he'll be opening King Wilfred's Faire on his uncle's dairy farm. Peggy Taxman, who runs Finch's activities with an iron hand, is not pleased, but the rest of the town enters so completely into the spirit of things that the local seamstress is overrun with orders for costumes. Lori soon finds a new friend in Jinks the jester, whose caravan is parked in the field near her house. He's known Calvin for years because they've both worked in many Renaissance fairs. Lori's twin sons are delighted to ride their ponies in the jousting parade. Only her lawyer husband Bill resists the festive spirit. Once the fair opens, Calvin has several close calls, almost falling from a gatehouse and getting nearly decapitated by a sandbag. Even that voice of reason, Aunt Dimity, Lori's mother's deceased friend who communicates by writing in a special book, can't keep Lori from jumping to conclusions. After enjoying Lori's ditzy adventures, her fans may well hunt up the nearest Renaissance fair. Others may find this coziest of cozies a bit of a snooze.

    Different

Actually, this book was rather boring with a plot that just about anyone could have written.

    Not her best.

I have loved most of the Dimity series, but this one was a clunker. Way too much time was spent describing Renn Fests (two "n"s, btw), and very little devoted to plot or characters. (I missed the interactions with the wonderful village "regulars.") The book just dragged, and it was all I could do to finish it. There was no indication of who the "villain" was until the end ... no little hints or clues along the way. And Aunt Dimity was almost an afterthought.

If you are new to the Aunt Dimity series, read the earlier books, and give this one a miss.

As for the glowing review previous to mine, bear in mind that it was submitted months before the book was published.

    more from this reviewer

    fine amateur sleuth mystery

All the residents of Finch in the Cotswolds even transplanted American Lori Shepherd and her ghostly roommate Aunt Dimity is excited with the preparations for summer when Calvin Malvern announces plans to host a Renaissance Faire. Everyone is euphoric with the idea of wearing historical garb while Calvin as King Wilfred the Good and his team of misfits prepare his uncle¿s land for the gala.

Everyone loves the fun except village manager and busybody Peggy Taxman and Lori¿s husband Bill who detest the Faire concept. At the Faire Lori's twin sons have a great time jousting while she enjoys dressing in costume and eating the food. However, Calvin has several near lethal accidents that Lori believes is the work of an assassin while Aunt Dimity tries to slow her down from drawing false conclusions that could place her in danger too.

Die hard fans and newcomers of this paranormal English village cozy will appreciate the latest Aunt Dimitry and Lori collaboration although the expatriate Yank still recklessly jumps head first into the fire from the frying pan in spite of her spirit teammate warning her to be cautious. Still quirky and well written, AUNT DIMITRY SLAYS THE DRAGONS is a fine amateur sleuth mystery, and readers who have shared tea with the paranormal heroine and the curt American over the course of thirteen know what to expect.
