Auscultation Skills: Breath and Heart Sounds, Fourth Edition is the only book-and-audio-CD product on the market that offers full coverage of heart and breath sounds from the simple to the complex and provides a comprehensive text explaining heart and breath sound fundamentals including basic anatomy and physiology, best auscultation locations, tips on how to identify each sound, and what to document. This product offers practicing nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants a solid basis for recognizing and differentiating among abnormal breath and heart sounds to help them accurately interpret what they hear and then apply that knowledge toward a proper diagnosis and treatment regimen.

The book is supplemented with an all-in-one CD that features 46 tracks of breath sounds and 50 tracks of heart sounds, which can be listened to sequentially with the book or reviewed in any order the reader chooses. The CD can be listened to in the car or on the computer; it can be downloaded to the computer and converted to MP3 files.

Tips and alerts abound throughout the book to help manage optimal care. A glossary of commonly used terms and abbreviations and an easy-to-read chart of common disorders matched with their specific abnormal breath and heart sounds add to the book's utility.

This popular CD/book product offers thorough training in recognizing and differentiating among abnormal breath and heart sounds. Two audio CDs provide 74 examples of breath sounds and 87 examples of heart sounds; a comprehensive text with over 200 illustrations explains breath and heart sound fundamentals, including anatomy, physiology, best auscultation sites, tips for identifying each sound, and documentation pointers. This edition's text includes timesaving assessment flowcharts for common abnormal heart and lung sounds. This edition also includes Spanish translations of common breath and heart assessment terms. CDs operate on PC, Mac, or any CD player.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Rosanne R. Griggs, BSN, MS, PhD, FNP-Bc(Purdue University School of Nursing)
Description: This compact book is packed with explanations of the causes of a wide variety of different cardiac and pulmonary auscultatory findings. Throughout, it references corresponding tracks on the accompanying CD, enabling users to listen to the sounds immediately after reading about the anatomical and physiologic changes associated with the sounds.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide "a practical tool to improve your ability to auscultate for these sounds and enhance your understanding of their physiology." The book combines text, illustrations, and sounds to meet these objectives.
Audience: The book is most appropriate for nurse practitioner or physician assistant students, medical residents, or any healthcare clinicians wishing to improve their cardiac and pulmonary auscultation expertise.
Features: The accompanying CD is the most valuable feature. Also helpful are pretest and post-test questions for each section, English-Spanish phrases used in cardiac and respiratory assessment, and the glossary of terms.
Assessment: As an auditory learner, I know this book would have been helpful when I studied health assessment, and that it will help me improve my cardiac and pulmonary assessment skills. Replacing the cassette tape that came with the previous version with a CD enables users to readily locate specific sounds. The illustrations in this edition are much improved, in color and detail, as well.

This descrioption never mentions that the Ebook version does not come with the CDs, which are absolutely essential. This is where you can listen to the abnormal heart and lung sounds which are the substance of the course. How about putting in large letters, "CD material DOES NOT come with the NookBook." How easy is that?
Given the description, it is very easy to purchase the nook book thinking that you are also getting the supplemental material from the CDs.

Do NOT purchase this as a NOOK Book as it DOES NOT COME WITH THE CD's. This book is a great resource but is almost worthless without the CD's. Despite the fact that the CD's are mentioned 7 times in the overview of the book and numerous times in the editorial review do not be fooled - they do not come with the NOOK version of this book. Do not let anyone in customer service tell you otherwise. I ordered this book and was told by a Nook representative that the CD would be delivered under separate cover to my address and I waited 12 days and when I called to ask where the CD is they said that not only do the CD's not come with the book, but it was too late to refund my money. Trying to get in touch with a supervisor and if I still get nowhere, they recommended that I call the publisher...Now I own a useless resource book on my Nook. Very disappointing customer service and absolutely false advertising. If you want to buy it you need to buy the old fashioned real book which would hopefully come with the CD's. Good Luck
