Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Magi Evans
Middle grade students who need information on Australia, whether for research or pleasure, need look no further than this addition to Heinemann's "Countries Around the World" series. Colson covers the history of Australia as a penal colony, through its colonization by the British and its current status as an independent nation of the British Commonwealth. Included in this history is the plight of the Aboriginals and their fight for recognition, as well as the country's progress toward equality today. Chapters of approximately six pages each cover such relevant topics as the land, wildlife, politics, and culture. Full-color photographs on each page alternate with text in a simple font. Colorful boxes highlight interesting facts about daily life and famous Australians. Students will especially appreciate the "How to Say" boxes, with various examples of how Australian English differs from that spoken by Americans. Words in bold print point readers to the extensive glossary. Maps, charts, and graphs further illustrate the many facts about the economy, industry, and population. An index, table of contents, timeline, bibliography and websites for further research are included. The appropriate balance between text and white space, plus separation of topics with bold print titles, makes it easy for students to find the facts they need. This title is recommended for elementary libraries and classrooms. Reviewer: Magi Evans
