Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
There are two types of career retrospectives: oddity-studded collections geared towards diehard fans and cherry-picking sets designed for the casual consumer. Despite the lofty title, this package falls squarely into the latter category, replicating the previously released hits set from America's favorite power-pop band and appending a brace of additions of middling interest. If your collection is lacking in the work of Rick Nielsen and company, you owe it to yourself to pick up this unflaggingly solid collection -- and to submit to a slap on the wrist from the ghosts of rock past. But given the fact that there are only two newly added songs here -- the rendition of "In the Street," renamed "That '70s Song," used as the theme song for TV's That '70s Show and a live "The Flame" said to be taken from the band's first concert performance of the monster ballad -- those who've already taken the plunge with the "unauthorized" greatest hits needn't duplicate their efforts.
All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
This is an "authorized" greatest hits collection in the sense that the band picked the selections themselves. It's preferable to the 1991 Greatest Hits comp for its slightly greater length 16 songs and better choice of material; the single version of "Southern Girls" makes it on this time around, for instance. Still, like that other album with "Greatest Hits" in the title, it misses a number of rockers that fans might rate among their best work. The only previously unreleased item is a live 1988 performance of "The Flame"; a live version of "I Can't Take It" and their rendition of "That 70's Song In the Street," the latter famed for its use as a television theme, are the only tracks recorded after 1990.
