Children's Literature
Want to learn about your favorite writers? Authors By Request shares the inside scoop on J.K. Rowling, Louis Sachar, Avi and nine others. These fascinating, kid-friendly bios by Janis Campbell and Cathy Collison include sidebars brimming with quotes, anecdotes, writing tips and fun facts. Six-year-old J.K. Rowling penned her first story about a rabbit with measles. Christopher Paul Curtis suggests that kids learn about their family histories—as he did when researching his award-winning novels. Paula Danziger loves wearing a ring on each finger and purple glitter boots. Young readers can also see the faces and read the words of real kids, who contributed essays on their favorite titles. 2002, Beyond Words,

VOYA
Twelve popular authors, including Brian Jacques, Jack Gantos, and Andrew Clements, are featured in chapter-length biographical sketches in this simple and straightforward compilation. Campbell and Collison focus especially on the everyday details of the authors' lives, making note of each author's daily writing schedule. Unusual trivia, "personal stuff," and noteworthy anecdotes are presented along with a brief history of how each author became a writer. One of the most effective entries is R. L. Stine's chapter, revealing such peculiarities as the fact that he types his books using only one finger and that he had a reoccurring and terrifying nightmare that disappeared as soon as he began writing scary stories. A photograph of each author is included, as well as contact information. J. K. Rowling is pictured on the cover, which might by itself increase the circulation of this book. Leonard Marcus's Author Talk (Simon & Schuster, 2000/VOYA October 2000) brings more immediacy and intimacy to the authors it covers. Nevertheless, because only one author, Lois Lowry, is duplicated between the two works, this book could make a good follow-up for students looking for more books like Marcus's. Although there is little that is new or particularly dazzling about this work, it is an adequate addition to libraries with a need to expand their author biography collection.
