In this classic, Deanna Sclar does a wonderful job of explaining the how-to's of car repair so that anyone can figure it out. What impresses me most is that she makes no assumptions about what you already know–everything is clearly mapped out. The book starts by listing the tools you'll need as a home-mechanic, along with photos of the beasts, and brief descriptions of what they are usd for and what to look for when buying them. It goes goes on to clearly explain just how a car works to look for when buying them. It goes on to clearly explain just how a car works form bumper to bumper. Each chapter is devoted to a specific system of the car with an explanation of how it works and how to fix it when it doesn't. Best of all, Deanna includes tips and pointers alond the way to make the job go smoother and a glossary for all those parts and terms that you can never remember. Doing your own repairs can go a long way toward boosting your confidence and disproving the "helpless female" stereotype, as well as saving you time and money.

    Really helpful

    I read this book after experiences with three different garages/mechanics. I wanted to have some clue what they were talking about so I would know whether or not they were being honest with me. This book has been hugely helpful. I have learned to change my tires, and have added power sterring fluid and coolant to my car. I went to my usual mechanic, whom I trust, and spent some time learning about my car and had my 100,000 mile check-up. This book has been really informative and helpful. I do wish there were more pictures and that some of the explanations were a bit clearer.

    Auto Repairs for Dummiees - a FATHER'S gift to his daughter

    After my eldest daughter had some auto repairs completed, I was amazed at what a poor job I had accomplished as a father in "downloading" car repair/operations into her when she was younger and under "wing." After hearing her stories about auto repair and how uninformed and ignorant she felt, her needs of a text was required for my highly college educated daughter. This manual gives a nice and understandable overview of the different car general operations and how they contribute to the operation of the vehicle. The parts are explained in a general overview and what can go wrong with them. The index is well organized for quick topic reference, so you do NOT have to read the entire book. You can find the section that relates to your needs at the time of quest. It follows the premise of the title format ".... for Dummies." Simple language, basic information to help you understand but not detailed to make you an expert. A GOOD first read on the topic.

    Know Your Car...

    As a car owner, I look for books that help me understand my car, its parts, basic repair, and ownership. I have found this book and Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care very beneficial. Auto Repair for Dummies does a good job identifying specific repair procedures. Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care explains automotive systems, how to buy a car, how a car works, average prices of parts, how to buy things like tires, and much more. Auto Repair for Dummies uses line art drawings, Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care shows pictures of actual car parts and has an activity CD. If you want to better understand your car, treat yourself to Auto Repair for Dummies and Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care.

    Excellent book for anyone who has not the slightest clue on how cars work. Also included are many easy step-by-step understandable instructions on how to maintain your own car through oil changes, lube jobs, etc. She saves you time, money, and increases knowledge about all types of cars... including the relatively new hybrid engines. A great buy!!!

    Perfect bood for not just dummies...but morons too!

    This book is incredible. I'm wanting to do a restoration project soon and I saw this book. Took it home and I couldn't put it down. Deanna does a GREAT job of putting all the little parts together and shows you how to get to the big picture. This book is a MUST for anyone wanting to learn ANYTHING about cars.

    this was a great book, it has everything imaginable! from dents to scrapes, to an oil change to a monthly tranmission check. its a great book, i love it. i recommened this book to everyone.
