Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
"Got bruises on my heart / And sometimes I get dark / If you want my autobiography... / Baby, just ask me," raspy-voiced newcomer Ashlee Simpson sings on title track to her debut disc, Autobiography. Fans of Simpson's eponymous MTV reality show, however, will already be familiar with the trials and triumphs that the 19-year-old has experienced thus far with her love life and fledgling career. The confessions of this preacher's kid -- a painful breakup "Pieces of Me", life in the spotlight with her beautiful-yet-IQ-challenged older sister, Jessica "Shadow" -- will strike a chord with disaffected teenage drama queens everywhere.
Thanks to Autobiography's producer, John Shanks Michele Branch, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrissette, the disc offers a winning mix of Avril-esque punk "Better Off", Garbage-reminiscent rock "La La", and Pink-tinted pop "Love for Me", which gives Ashlee -- who dyed her blonde hair jet black in an attempt to forge her own identity -- a distinctly non-Jessica sound. Credit should also be given to Simpson, who despite sounding derivative at times, is far more talented than fellow MTV darling Kelly Osbourne and has a enough vocal prowess and personal style to become a star in her own right.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Give Ashlee Simpson some credit -- she or her management knew that the only way to break out of the shadow of her older sister, Jessica, was to be her opposite. So, she dyed her blonde hair jet-black, based her music in rock, not dance-pop, and co-wrote every song on her 2004 debut, Autobiography Jessica only co-wrote one on her debut, Sweet Kisses. It could be argued that this makeover for the star of the square WB TV series 7th Heaven is a bit too calculated, but regardless of the intent, the end result still works far better than that of her big sister's albums. Where Jessica sounds like a throwback to the late '60s/early '70s, specifically to the variety shows of Andy Williams and Sonny & Cher, Ashlee is modern, using the glossy, punky pop of Pink and Avril Lavigne as the touchstone for her debut. It's heavy on guitars and light on dance beats, although those are bubbling under the layers and layers of six-strings, and Ashlee has adopted a growl that may come out closer to a mousey squeak, but the attitude is appreciated all the same. And that pretty much sums up Autobiography -- it's not perfect, and it's often affected, but it winds up being endearing because of her earnestness. Not only is she trying hard -- and, in the case of "Lala," trying way too hard to be sexy -- but she's succeeding in creating an album that feels like a bubblegum version of Pink's M!ssundaztood, even if it's not quite as catchy. While the album could have used a few more songs with indelible hooks, it nevertheless is an enjoyably slick, widescreen production that's a whole lot more fun than anything her sister has recorded with the notable exception of "I Think I'm in Love With You", plus it's varied enough to suggest that Ashlee could make a more interesting record the next time out. All in all, it's an unexpectedly strong debut from an artist who seemed destined to be a footnote to her famous older sister, but just may wind up with a more interesting career.
New York Times - Jon Pareles
Ms. Simpson can put a rasp in her voice, echoing the pop-rock snarl of Joan Jett, and she dispenses image-making boasts, particularly in the album's title song: "I'm a sexy girl in this crazy world."

    so-so

it is sort of catchy but it's not the best thing i have ever heard. i like her more than jessica simpson because i like more fast beat catchy songs, but i think jessica has a better voice. lots of people could sing like ashlee, but i still think her cd is pretty good and if you have extra cash then it is worth it to buy.

    Yuck.

Wow, after all the reviews i heard on tv and such i thought that this girl might actually have a rock edge to her music. After hearing it for myself i beg to differ. It sickens me how people call this 'punk rawk' and call her a real rockstar. This is definitely NOT any branch of rock, and my deepest sympathy goes out to all the ignorant kids that think it is. This is simply.. pop. period.

I Agree With Everyone! This Isn't Punk Rock!

Ashlee Simpson is one of the worst singers to date. She's such a poser, just like Avril Lavigne. Real punk is supposed to be strange, rebellious, and exciting. This is just radio-friendly pop with electric guitars in the background. It's people like Ashlee that are ruining punk rock, one of the greatest things to happen to music ever. So to everyone who is calling Ashlee punk or hardcore, stop! You don't know what you're doing!

    This CD is HORRID!

This CD (and artist) are a disgrace to the music industry. She is horrible at singing, she sounds like a dog being ran over. She can't write a good song either (what is with the whole 'La La'?) That's such a retarded song. The only reason she got a record deal is because she whined to her dad that Jessica got more attention!!! Ashlee is such a poser and fake. She isn't a troubled person like she claims, it's all an image! My friend has more problems then she does and she doesn't whine about it. Ashlee needs to quit saying she's punk (she wouldn't know punk if it came up and bit her) and she needs to go back to Texas where she came from, and STAY THERE!!!!

NO BRAINS, NO TALENT, NO RESPECT, AND NO REASON

If I had to give this 0 stars, I would! NO BRAINS--(says to her older sister Jessica) You know what, Jess. I'm going to be a superstar like you someday. I'll have my own album, my own reality show, and I'll make lots and lots of money! NO TALENT--Who in the world ever told Ashlee that she could sing? She has no training! I can't even believe that she hired a vocal coach to teach her how to sing properly on this album! NO RESPECT--After the stunt that she pulled on SNL and the Orange Bowl, I have no respect for her whatsoever. It serves her right to be "booed" off the stage! NO REASON--There should be no reason to go out and by this album! Ashlee is a disgrace to the pop music industry. Why don't you check out of the pop culture industry, get a job working at Wal-Mart somewhere, and leave us alone for Heaven's sakes? As long as she's in her sister's shadow, she'll never succeed. You make me wanna SCREAM my head off!!!!

    She can't sing

Some of the lyrics to her songs are okay. However her voice is awful, she is untrained with no range and it shows. Also the way she says certain words such as "darkness" is irritating. Despite the marketing of the album as rock, it is pop.

Not so great as they made her out to be.

This work on Ashlee's album was nothing but a disappoinment. Honestly, on her show, it seemed everytime she attempted to record a track for "Autobiography," her voice sounded horrible. It's a cross between Britney Spears' rigid voice and a dying cow. It seems the only image she is trying to provide to her audience is--she is not like her sister! All I hear her mention is how she wants to seperate from Jessica, and be "punk." Way to label yourself Ashlee, it's all great. I do not recommend this CD at all. Better go find your keys or a ride to the music store, this is a worthy return for an exchange of your money back.

    a screaming hissy

I am VERY disappointed in her CD because all I ever hear is a screeching, off-tune voice--a voice I won't even consider a real singing voice. After listening to her whole CD (yes, even though I hated it, I had to listen to the whole thing to see if it would change my view--which it didn't), I was left with a terribly throbbing headache. However, the only thing I appreciate about Ashlee is that she is different from her sister, and not a copy-cat teen bopper singer.

    Ehh...

I really was expecting better from this girl. I know the music might sound a little pop-punkish, but the lyrics are about as deep as a puddle. LaLa in particular is just a waste of time... I hope to god parents realize what they're letting their ten-year old daughters listen to. To put it simply... I was less than impressed with this release.

    A little dissapointed...

I expected Miss Simpson's new CD to be more original, but it sounded 2 much like alot of other young women's music in the industry (No DOubt, Avril) and her classicaly called 'raspy' voice blended a bit with her music and didn't stand out. Oh, well, gotta give her credit for tryin...

    Its ok....

I heard a lot about Ashlee Simpson and I wanted to see what her music is like, when I got this album I thought, ok but she could have done better, the lyrics express anger and hate, which I don't like.
Her voice is out of tune and some of the songs are not that great, like lala, which I don't understand the meaning to that song. Autobiography is not a good song, uses cuss words a lot and expresses anger and hate. She also sounds like a drunk robot when she sings.
pieces of me is a good song, the song shadow seems like she is jealous of her older sister jessica. love makes the world go round is alright, better off is ok, love me for me is not a great song, surrender, I don't know about that one. the rest of the songs were just ok.

    i love this album

Ashlee Simpson's album is one of the best albums it is really good every song in the album her first single Pieces of Me RoCKs!!!!!!!!!! Even though she lype sync in SNL i dont care lots of singers do, So if you dont like her cause of that then that is dumb because every young singer lype synch. Like Hilary Duff! So for me Autobiography is 10 out of 10 for me.
