Overview

From the beaches of Formentera to prison in Afghanistan to seeking Nirvana in India and back, Schultz shares in a delightful writing style anecdotes of pleasure, humor, suspense, fear, and reflection that ultimately transformed him into a well-respected orthopaedic surgeon.

In Autobiography of a Baby Boomer you'll follow the journey of a post-modernist baby-boomer from Father Knows Best middle class Fair Lawn, New Jersey to the hippy trail through Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The overland journey in search of something more than he could find at Cornell University Medical College covers four years during a time when "dropping out," "turning on," and "free-love" were the gospel. Through his travels, drugs, séances, very far-out "Road People," and his parents' unremitting love, author Robert Schultz comes to truly appreciate the American way of life. In an admittedly unconventional way, Schultz discovers the rather conventional joy of having a family and the awesome responsibility that comes with it.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the subject matter, I was horrified by the lack of editing. "Shear" for "sheer" was used numerous times:(

    Fantastic Story

The author draws you in to his life immediately. You can't turn the pages fast enough to find out what happens next. Not only are you experiencing his extraordinary life, but if you also are a baby boomer he makes you reflect on your life. At times his story makes you feel sad, happy, and fills you with emotions that one can only experience for themselves. You don't have to be a "boomer" to enjoy this great read. I recommend it highly.

    solid entertainment

The author brings the shake-up '60s to light, capturing the ethos of that whirlwind time with charm and wit. Then he takes the reader with him on a ride through the medical world and an inside look into the making of a doctor. Most interesting, since I doubt many docs lower their guard enough to be seen naked of their white coat protection.

Add to this the historical references that the author uses to caress us with our past and you have a nostalgic diary of touching intimacy. No doubt written for the Baby Boomer generation, the fast moving pace will give the youngsters a chance to enjoy an enigmatic era without feeling left out. Highly recommended for all.

The cover is a turn on, but the book is even better!

Autobiography of a Baby Boomer is a page-turner that made my heart pound in Part One, the tears flow in Part Two, and my mind reflect in Part Three. Although written for the Baby Boomer crowd, I as a young adult, was thoroughly entertained. It satisfied some of my fascination with the '60s.
