Meet the Author


George Dewey (1837–1917) graduated from the U.S. naval academy in 1858. He served with distinction during the Civil War, and had a long and successful naval career. When he returned to the U.S. after his success at the Battle of Manila Bay, he received a hero’s welcome. He credited his success to his strict, religious upbringing by his father.
