Preface

This book has been organized into three main parts: "Getting Started," "Sections and Tutorials" (typically made of several tutorial "exercises" that illustrate commands), and "Putting It All Together," which uses the knowledge gleaned from the Sections and Tutorials to create a building.

The exercises in this book are designed to be tutorials in most of the major commands and routines used in operating Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2004. Rather than require the student to read a great deal of verbiage and theory, this book uses the hands-on method of learning, with each exercise guiding the student through the typical use of the commands for a subject. It is intended that the student perform the exercises first before attempting to use the program to design a building. It is also intended that the student perform the sections in the order presented as the sections often add information for later exercises. Even if a student understands a particular command, it might still be helpful to complete that exercise either to gain new insight or to compare operator strategy. This book assumes a general knowledge of standard AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT up to Release 2000i. Students without knowledge of Paperspace and Modelspace will be at a very great disadvantage. It is also important that the student have a good understanding of the Windows® operating system, and be able to quickly navigate the various navigation trees in that system.

Because buildings are so complex, and the variations are so numerous, 3D CAAD (Computer-Aided Architectural Design) programs such as Autodesk Architectural Desktop are not inherently easy to use, and have, in my opinion, never been a program for the computer or CAD novice. Because of this complexity, one can become very frustrated when first approaching the multitude of commands even though the programmers have gone to great effort to make this software user-friendly.

This author believes that a good operator follows several fundamental working procedures.

  • Use the fewest number of keystrokes for a particular operation. Do not use the full typed name of a command if the command can be performed with a letter alias.
  • Use the space bar on the keyboard while operating the program instead of the Enter key except when inserting text.
  • Use a strategy of operating this program as you would play a game of chess, thinking several moves ahead, and never moving backwards unless absolutely necessary.
