I had left the mountains far behind me, and was nearing the Moon Clearing. I soared over the trees, heading for the small patch where the trees were missing.
Would the other Chosen be there? What if I wasn't the Dragon they needed? Had Grapple made a mistake? Could I really unite the Kingdoms?
I alighted on the edge of the clearing, my wings causing a whirlwind of fallen leaves. The Moon Clearing was empty, except for a small boulder in the center, and—
"What are you doing here?" I growled apon seeing an emerald green viper coiled beside the stone.
"Same as you, waiting," the snake replied with what might have been a shrug.
After deciding that he wasn't a threat I said, "I'm Raina."
"Venom. Welcome to the Moon Clearing," came the viper's reply. He seemed to be studying me with his beady black eyes. I looked around, wondering if I we were really the only two here. Not a sound, not a creature. Venom and I were the only two present.
"I'm the Chosen of the Dragons. Where are the others?" I asked the snake.
"That, I do not know," Venom said, shaking his head. The viper didn't speak for a while, and appeared lost in thought.
"I suppose I'll have to wait then," I said with a sigh.
Suddenly, I heard a flutter of wings, and a small sparrow alighted down beside Venom.
"Who are you?" I asked the bird.
"Gary, son of Feather, son of Ryst, son of Don, son of Rusty, son of some sparrow, I forget his name right now. Are you one of the Chosen? Venom was telling me about them," the sparrow chirped.
"Yes, I'm one of the Chosen. My name's Raina," I replied.
"You don't eat sparrows, do you?"
"No. You'd hardly be worth a mouthful once I'd plucked all the feathers off."
Suddenly, Venom spoke. "Gary, would you be so kind as to scout the forest to see if the other Chosen are coming? Raina and I will start scouting too. We need to know if they're coming or not."
Gary nodded. "Right away! I'll find them all, and then bring them right back here." With that, he pumped his wings and flew off.
"I'll head this way," Venom informed me. "You take that path. Hopefully, we'll find the others quickly."
I nodded, then set off down the path he had directed. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the viper slithering off.
The forest was alive with noise, unlike the quiet murmurs from the woods back home. I missed the soft sound of the wind in the trees, and the babble of the brook. Most of all, I missed the company of my friends. I hoped Blazer and Striker were okay. Probally playing with Bre and Spark.
But I told myself that I'd be seeing them again soon. After all, in order to unite the Kingdoms we will have to visit the Kingdoms and speak to the leaders.
I heard a faint noise, and stiffened. Was that the low call of an owl? Horned Owl, or Great Gray? Or an Elf Owl? There weren't many owl up in the mountains—beside a few Barn Owls and a random assortment of Spotted Owls—so I couldn't distunguish which species it was.
But then I heard a sound I could identify—the loud snap of a twig snapping beneath a foot.
I unsheathed my long talons, but quickly put them away. Mabye it was another of the Chosen!
I saw a figure walking towards me, and I emerged from the cover of the undergrowth.
I was met by a scream of terror.
