Automating Photoshop CS2 Matt Kloskowski ISBN 0-321-39675-8 Review by John Shaw When it comes to mastering Photoshop CS2, it¿s not enough to just understand the many and varied features and ponder, `what can I do in Photoshop¿? To harness its true power you need to ask, `what can Photoshop do for me¿? Here is a DVD that really will improve your productivity and workflow. It is packed with 154 minutes of useful information that shows you how to create actions, droplets and scripts that enable batch processing. In essence that means you can complete other work and leave Photoshop to process time consuming repetitive tasks. The host carefully explains each step and enables you to work along in CS2 if you so desire to reinforce the method. From an introduction into the basic actions packaged with Photoshop, you are taken through seven chapters that include editing and customising actions, Scripts and Automation to Batch processing and Droplets. Whether it¿s the creation of a simple action to save repetitive jobs or the versatile conditional logic actions, that actually make decisions for you dependent on the parameters you have set, it¿s all on this DVD. Most of the actions are demonstrated then recapped to show they have worked. This is a useful way to learn although at times I found the host to be a little too verbose and I felt some time could have been better utilised showing additional methods than recapping at all stages. Despite this I have no doubt that this DVD will make you more productive, speed up the digital workflow and add a whole new level of automation to your work. After a little practice you will banish those repetitive tasks and move on to more creativity and whether you are renaming a few images or batch processing hundreds of Raw files you will wonder how you ever managed without it.
Title: Automating Photoshop CS2 (DVD) Author: Matt Kloskowski Publisher: Peachpit Press: Nov 30, 2005 1 DVD (154 total minutes) ISBN: 0321396758 List Price: USA $39.99 Peachpit member discount price: $ $27.99 General information: Automating Photoshop CS2 is divided into 7 chapters on 1 DVD. The documentation on the back cover states that this DVD is for playback on a computer (Windows 2000 or XP or Mac OSX) only. The audio quality of the DVD is acceptable. Unlike other DVD-based tutorials produced by KW Computer Training Inc. (for example, Mastering Camera Raw, Photoshop CS2 for Beginners) the video quality is very good. Also this video comes with its own application interface for viewing and navigating the chapters. To start the video you need to open the PSCS2_Automation folder on the DVD and select start.exe or start.osx. This is explained by reading the file DVDROMREADME.doc on the DVD. The documentation text in very small font size within the inside DVD cover refers the reader to DVDROM.txt, that filename is incorrect. Here is a summary of the contents: Chapter 1 - This chapter is about 10 minutes long and introduces the general concepts of actions. Chapter 2 - This chapter is about 10 minutes long and discusses the concepts of creating actions. Chapter 3 - This chapter is about 35 minutes long and discusses in detail the concepts of editing, customizing and saving actions. Chapter 4 - This chapter is about 25 minutes long and discusses the concepts of batch processing/renaming (via Bridge) and droplets. Chapter 5 - This chapter is about 45 minutes long and discusses in detail the concepts of scripts and automations (for example, image processor, web photo gallery, flash galleries, contact sheet II). Note: About 13 minutes is allocated to scripts which may or may not be interesting to all users. Chapter 6 - This chapter is about 25 minutes long and discusses advanced techniques using actions. For example: undoing actions, conditional steps with actions (via Image Ready), running actions within another action, layers with actions, and trouble-shooting actions. Chapter 7 - This chapter is about 5 minutes long and discusses where to go from here. It describes the content of the DVD folders, content on the web via Adobe Studio Exchange, NAPP and other web sites. Summary: If you take a lot of photos and want/need to perform repeatable actions on these images and you are a visual person (you learn best from watching someone perform a task rather than reading about it) then this DVD is for you. The DVD will get you up to speed on all the functionality of Actions, Batch Processing and Automations faster than any book (including Matt's). You will also pick up some helpful tips along the way to save yourself time and work more efficiently with many files at once. The DVD also contains the images used in the examples/tutorials to practice on. At a list price of $39.99 for 1 DVD containing just 154 minutes I believe this is a fair value. Fortunately, this DVD set can be bought online at a substantial discounted member price, thus making it a good value. I recommend this product. Matt is an excellant teacher and presenter with the knowledge of the topics to back it up. Note: The producer KW Computer Training Inc. of this DVD-based tutorial should improve and correct the setup/use instructions on the outside/inside cover.
