I purchased a paperback copy of this book which had been printed in Singapore under license from McGraw-Hill. Due to the book being a copy, not all the photographs are very clear, however the excellent illustrations/explanations help to balance that out. This book starts at the VERY beginning of how automobiles came to be explaning the concepts of physics behind running a car and leading up to some basic overviews of different vehicle types. It then goes right into each major system 'engines for example' using simple language/diagrams and photographs to explain how it all works. The sections are labled in such a way that previous information can found easily in case the reader missed or forgot something. The layout is what you'd expect from a text book well organized and easy to follow. Although I'm not an automotive expert and have never taken any formal study courses, I had few problems understanding exactly what was said. Anything that I wasn't sure on, I could easily scan over the section in question and get the answer. The book offers automotive questions and each question is indexed so you can quickly check your answers. There is also an extensive glossary of terms in the back for those wishing to find a quick definition without reading the related section. Although this book dates to 1993, most of the information in it is just as relevant today as it was then. Cars are constantly changing and more advanced/electronic parts are being added which require a good deal of computer knowledge when it comes to diagnoses and repairs. However, the basic operations are more or less the same. This book does not tell you in detail how to make repairs'although it does give some instructions', but it does not hide this fact and frequently tells the reader to consult the repair manual for his/her vehicle. Many safety issues are addressed which is always essential when dealing with powerful machines. If you're looking for a good understanding of automobiles, and some information on how to diagnose various mechanical problems, this book is excellent! Just reading the text casually will give you FAR more knowledge than most people on how these important machines work.
