This book may be used by various groups for several purposes:

  1. By all students and apprentices entering the automotive refinishing trade who want to learn how to apply automotive finishes.
  2. By paint instructors in high schools, vocational schools, and colleges who need updated information about refinishing.
  3. By experienced painters who want updated paint information and who want to increase their skills in refinishing.
  4. By all personnel connected with automotive refinishing who want to become familiar with the latest developments in refinish products and their application.
  5. By anyone who wants to gain a working understanding of the latest government clean air regulations and a thorough coverage of HVLP spray equipment.

For easy reference, the book is divided into self-descriptive chapters covering applicable portions of the refinish operation. Chapter 1, "Description of the Automotive Refinishing Trade," describes those businesses and organizations that are members of the trade. Also included is a description of how paint shops are regulated.

Chapter 2, "How Vehicles Are Painted at the Factory and in the Refinish Trade," gives the painter insight into repair operations. Featured topics are paint shop safety rules, paint identification, and ordering paint from a paint jobber.

Chapter 3, "Paint Spray Guns and Paint Cups," explains how all spray guns are divided into two categories:

The 3M company has available a paint polishing system called PERFECT-IT II, which stresses simplicity in going from the finest abrasive to a more coarse one to make a repair. Risks are eliminated because repairs progress from finer abrasives to coarser ones as the situation demands. Maguiar's and other polish companies have equivalent products available.

Chapter 14, "Color-Matching Fundamentals and Techniques," covers topics carefully assembled by experts from car companies and paint manufacturers. This chapter lays a solid groundwork for the person who wants to learn the art of tinting and color matching. To do acceptable paint repairs on a competitive basis, each paint shop must be able to tint a color at the time a car is being painted. A shop should be equipped with a complete set of tinting colors, tinting guides, and color-mixing equipment from leading paint suppliers.

Chapter 15, "Painting Interior Plastic Parts," covers two systems of painting interior plastic parts that are in use:

  1. A low-VOC system (with HVLP equipment) is required in compliant areas.
  2. A conventional refinish system continues to be used in noncompliant areas.

Check with your local paint jobber or with your local air pollution control (APC) district to determine which products and application procedures are permitted in your area.
