Editorial Reviews

John Mort
Blunt humor and engaging style enliven this how-to for automotive upholsterers, called trimmers. Taylor leads off with a discussion of tools of the trade, which include sewing machines, air compressors, spray guns (for glue), and various hand tools. Then he discusses sewing--the trimmer's bedrock skill--and follows with an exercise to make a stadium cushion, which allows the novice to incorporate almost every basic procedure that automotive upholstery requires. Then it's on to the various specialties of the craft: making bench-seat covers; building seats; installing vinyl, landau, and convertible tops; and working with headliners, door panels, and carpets. Finally, there are chapters on marine upholstery, motorcycle seats, and van interiors. A fine guide aimed at the novice seeking a trade, but throughout--in his discussion of equipment, for instance--Taylor addresses the hobbyist, too.
