Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Tony is a poor little rich boy, with plenty of cash but no real friends. Jack is the maintenance man's son, hardened from torment by bullies and driven by his love of snowboarding. Who will shred the best and win the prize—a top notch snowboard? Aburtov's illustrations are splashy and colorful; he uses a wide variety of page layouts and panel styles. In keeping with its role as part of the "Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels" series, this volume is packaged like a magazine, with catchy section headings like "Sports Zone Postgame Recap" and "Feature Presentation." The content is designed to attract upper elementary and middle school readers, but the reading level is low, making this an ideal "high-low" title for middle grade reluctant readers. Although the formula is familiar, the character arcs are more unusual, which adds a nice layer of interest to the simple story. This attractive, unintimidating package will find an audience among young sports fans who may be reluctant readers. Reviewer: Raina Sedore
