FLY A PIECE OF HISTORY

12 Models - 30 Planes - 12 Display Stands

Presenting the greatest hits of powered aviation - here are easy-to-make, accurate, and airworthy replicas of 12 historically important planes. There's the Wright Flyer, changing aviation history with a 12-second maiden voyage. The Fokker Dr.I Triplane, famously and perhaps fatally painted bright red by the Red Baron, Manfred Von Richthofen. Plus the Ryan NYP - Spirit of St. Louis, Bell X-1, and Rutan/Yeager Voyager, the only aircraft ever to circle the globe without refueling, setting eight world records and returning to Edwards Air Force Base with a mere 18 gallons of fuel to spare. With 30 planes in all, there are at least two full-colored copies of each model - one for flying, one for show - plus fold-up stands to display them. Each model is meticulously detailed and comes with comprehensive folding instructions, along with tips on how to achieve the best flight. Includes a brief history of aviation, chart of famous aviators, stats, and specs. It's an air and space museum, ready to cut, fold, glue, and fly.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This brief and colorful history of flight begins with the first Chinese kites that flourished around 300 B.C.E. and ends with contemporary space shuttles. The authors explain how World War I was the catalyst to transform aircraft into weapons' carriers, and include several examples of military planes, such as the Bell X-1, the North American P-51 Mustang, and the Boeing F-15 Eagle. There is a section of hints on paper-airplane construction and advice on how to adjust the reproductions for optimum flight. More than half of the book is comprised of patterns that follow the fascinating text and illustrations; they are designed to be cut out and assembled, but they can be traced, cut out, and retraced onto heavy paper like the kind used in the book. This is a good title for bringing military and aviation history to life, and to inspire teens enrolled in beginning engineering and physics classes to create their own aviation designs.-Joyce Fay Fletcher, Rippon Middle School, Prince William County, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
